Chapter 302: She Came Alone
"Ms. Estella, have you told Mr. Farwell about this?" the driver asked. He hadn't thought to ask until they were underway.
His question was met with silence, and the driver knew he was in trouble. She must have run away without telling him. He'd be in serious trouble if Mr. Farwell found out.
He glanced hesitantly at her in the rearview mirror. "How about I call him?"
"No," Estella said, shaking her head. "I don't want to tell him! He's the reason Ms. Jarvis refused to let me stay last time. She doesn't like Daddy. She won't let me in if he's around."
Since Estella was adamant, the driver didn't press her. He'd call Mr. Farwell when they arrived.
They soon reached Roxanne's house. Estella immediately jumped out, ran to the door, and rang the doorbell. Everyone was upstairs with Roxanne, so no one heard. The insistent ringing eventually subsided as time passed with no answer. Estella was on the verge of tears.
Lysa came downstairs to make Roxanne oatmeal and heard the doorbell. She was surprised to see Estella. "Essie! Are you here alone?"
"Ms. Lane" Estella cried.
"Did you come alone?" Lysa asked again.
Estella nodded furiously, then peeked inside to see if Roxanne or the boys were there. Disappointed to find no one, she waited as Lysa hesitated before letting her in.
Lysa had seen Roxanne send Lucian and Estella away and was unsure of Roxanne's feelings toward them. However, seeing the girl alone, she decided not to send her away. She asked Estella to wait in the living room while she told Roxanne about her visit.
"Did she come alone?" Roxanne asked, confused. She looked ill, her face flushed and her lips pale and cracked.
Lysa nodded. "She's waiting downstairs. Should I let her come up, or should I contact Mr. Farwell?"
Roxanne, feeling unwell, was slow to respond. Before she could answer, Archie and Benny spoke up. They knew how much Estella missed Roxanne and, since she'd come alone, thought she should see Roxanne. Otherwise, she might run away again. They knew Roxanne was angry with Lucian, not Estella.
Seeing Roxanne didn't object, they quickly argued for Estella. "Mommy, just let her in. She must have found out from Ms. Ward. That's why she came." Roxanne frowned, then nodded. The image of Estella curled up alone flashed in her mind, and she couldn't bear the thought of letting her wait alone.
With Roxanne's agreement, the boys went downstairs to bring Estella up. Estella had been to Roxanne's room before and stayed for a long time, but she was still nervous. It had been a long time since she'd seen Roxanne, and Roxanne was ill.
