Chapter 303: She Left By Herself
"Ms. Jarvis" Estella's eyes welled up at the sight of Roxanne's sickly complexion.
Roxanne's heart melted at Estella's voice. Seeing the little girl running to her bedside, she forced a smile. "I'm fine, Essie. Don't worry."
Estella leaned by the bedside, staring at Roxanne with teary eyes, like a pitiful kitten.
Roxanne's gaze calmed Estella considerably. "Why are you here alone?" she asked gently.
"Ms. Ward says you're sick," Estella said, close to tears.
Roxanne nodded and caressed the little girl's head. "Thank you for caring so much about me, Essie."
Estella also reached out, intending to touch Roxanne's forehead. Roxanne remembered the burning heat of her own forehead during a previous fever check. When she realized Estella's intention, Roxanne tried to sit up and move closer, but lacked the strength, falling back onto the bed.
Worry etched Estella's face.
Roxanne smiled apologetically. "If you're worried, why don't you get on the bed, too?"
Estella immediately removed her shoes and climbed onto the bed, lightly touching Roxanne's forehead. Panic filled her eyes at the contact. She remembered Ms. Jarvis' previous fever, requiring a hospital stay. Roxanne's forehead felt much warmer this time. "But she doesn't like Daddy and doesn't want Daddy here" she thought.
Meanwhile, Lucian was in a meeting when Pippa called. He frowned at the caller ID, delegated the meeting to his assistant, and stepped outside to answer.
"Essie left by herself, Mr. Farwell," Pippa reported anxiously.
Lucian's expression darkened. "What happened?"
Pippa was nervous. "She got into the Farwell family car. I think she wanted to visit Ms. Jarvis. She asked why Archie and Benny weren't at school. I told her Ms. Jarvis was sick, and she immediately got back in the car. She likes Ms. Jarvis very much"
She hesitated, unsure of her conclusions, but concerned about Estella's safety.
Estella being in their car slightly relieved Lucian, but learning of Roxanne's illness made him frown. "What's wrong with Ms. Jarvis?"
"She has a fever. Archie and Benny are caring for her at home," Pippa replied.
Lucian's deep voice followed. "Understood. Excuse Essie from school today, please. Thank you."
After Pippa agreed, Lucian ended the call and summoned Cayden. "I'm going to Roxanne's. Get Dr. Elswick."
Dr. Sonny Elswick, the Farwell family's physician, was highly skilled but primarily served the family.
Cayden understood Lucian wanted Elswick to treat Roxanne. He found Lucian's concern for Roxanne increasingly perplexing but complied.
Sonny arrived quickly. Lucian waited for him before going to Roxanne's, anticipating Roxanne might refuse him entry if he went alone. Bringing a doctor seemed wise.
