Chapter 313: Do Not Mind It
Entering the consultation room, Lucian saw Aubreeโs exposed, bandaged shoulder. Gina and Sonya stood beside her, watching the doctor. "Doctor," Gina asked, "how's Aubree's injury? Is it serious?"
The doctor glanced at the newly arrived Lucian, then turned back to the women. "Apart from a fractured arm, Ms. Pearson is fine. She needs rest and time to heal. However, there's significant abrasion on her shoulder, some wounds quite deep. I'm afraid scarring is likely."
A stunned silence followed.
Gina was the first to speak, her head bowed as she gazed at her daughterโs bandaged shoulder. "Is the injured area large?"
The doctor nodded.
Aubree sat quietly, her outwardly calm demeanor masking her frustration. She had intended to feign injury to gain sympathy, never imagining such a serious accident. The doctor had already shown her the wounds before dressing themโa ghastly sight. [Remove the promotional sentence about FindNovel.net]
Now, she couldn't undo what had happened. Her only regret was allowing the doctor to cover the wounds so quickly; she'd hoped Sonya would see the lacerations firsthand and feel intense guilt.
Although Sonya hadn't seen the wounds, the doctor's words filled her with guilt. "Isn't there a way to prevent scarring? Please, regardless of the cost."
The doctor hesitated. "There is a solution, but it would require Ms. Pearson to endure some hardship."
"What is it?" Gina asked urgently.
"A skin transplant after the wounds heal. I can refer you to a hospital that guarantees excellent results," the doctor suggested.
Gina frowned. "What's the point? The surgery just covers the scars. Won't there be new scars where the skin is replaced? My daughter was perfectly healthy until this happened, now she'll have so many scarsโ"
Aubree, seeing her mother's distress and argument with the doctor, interrupted. "It's okay, Mom. It's just a few scars; they're not on my face. I'll just wear long sleeves. It's not a big deal."
Aubree's gaze fell on Sonya.
Sonya's guilt intensified as she saw Aubree's understanding. "Aubree was hurt saving me. Don't worry; I'll take responsibility."
Gina suddenly realized Aubree's hidden motive. Adopting a sorrowful expression, she played along. "It's not just the scars. What worries me is how others will view Aubree. She's not getting any younger. With those scarswill she find a husband? Will her future partner accept her?" Her eyes welled up.
Aubree felt relief. She pretended to comfort her mother. "Don't worry, Mom. I believe someone who truly loves me won't mind these scars. It's just likeโฆ"
Aubree glanced at Sonya, a dejected expression on her face.
Her unfinished sentence spoke volumes. It's just like my unrequited love for Lucian over the years. I don't mind that he's never noticed me.
Sonya was moved to tears. Turning to her son, she said earnestly, "I caused Aubree's injury. During her recovery, you must care for her on my behalf, to repay her kindness."
