Chapter 315: That Was Not What I Meant
Lucian finished his paperwork and strode toward the ward. He received a call from Cayden just as he was about to open the door. He stopped and answered, "What is it? Is the driver caught?"
Cayden reported grimly, "Mr. Farwell, we've checked all nearby surveillance footage, but to no avail. The driver was well-hidden. We've had difficulty identifying his face. We've apprehended several suspects, but haven't been able to definitively link anyone to the crime."
Lucian's eyes dimmed. "What about the police?"
"According to Mom," he continued, "the incident happened in public. How is it possible they have no leads?"
Cayden replied solemnly, "It's the same with the police. Several suspects are in custody for questioning, but I don't think the culprit is among them."
"I see. Keep investigating," Lucian said curtly. Cayden immediately complied.
After hanging up, Lucian looked serious. The incident had occurred in public, yet no one had apprehended the culprit. If Cayden was correct, the perpetrator had planned meticulously to cover their tracks. Something felt amiss.
Lost in thought, Lucian was interrupted by Sonya, who emerged from the ward. "What took you so long?" she complained. "I came looking for you. Hurry up and get inside."
Lucian followed his mother into the room. Aubree was resting in bed, with the Walkers beside her. Her injuries were severe. Though treated and bandaged, the throbbing pain left her pale. She was accustomed to a life of luxury and had never before experienced such trauma. This incident, however, had proven her dedication to earning Sonya's trust.
Aubree dismissed her thoughts and offered a weak smile as Lucian entered. "You're back, Lucian."
Lucian nodded. Before Aubree could speak, he asked, "Did you see the driver's face?"
Aubree was startled but tried to remain calm. "Mrs. Farwell and I were panicked. Our priority was protecting ourselves. We didn't have time to look at the driver."
Her face paled as she spoke, as if recalling a terrifying memory.
Sonya added, "Yes, it all happened so fast. We were terrified! Who would think to check the driver at that moment? By the time we recovered, he was gone."
Lucian nodded, knowing he was unlikely to get any useful information from them.
"Are you suspecting me of orchestrating this?" Aubree asked contemptuously, feeling aggrieved.
Before Lucian could answer, Sonya intervened, her voice sharp. "Do you know how dangerous this was? Aubree risked her life! Furthermore, she was the one who asked the driver to apologize. If she were behind this, why would she want him to reveal his face?"
Lucian rubbed his temples. "Don't get upset. That's not what I meant. I was just asking."
Sonya defended Aubree vehemently. "You can doubt me, but you can't make assumptions about Aubree!" Having witnessed the incident, Sonya fully trusted Aubree.
Lucian nodded indifferently, but his gut feeling persisted. Something was wrong.
