Chapter 367: Failing to Find a Way Out
Alfred's expression was grim. Queen Group had made a promise to an outsider because of him, a promise they couldn't fulfill. "I can't believe this is happening at my age," he muttered, his voice laced with humiliation. "And Roxanne saved my life!"
"Find out who double-crossed me!" he declared furiously.
Seeing his anger, Roxanne immediately consoled him. "Old Mr. Queen, I'm relieved it wasn't your order. Please don't be angry; I won't blame you. I just want to know what happened."
Alfred took a few deep breaths to calm himself before turning to Roxanne. "Even if they ignore this, I will give you an explanation! I'm still alive, and I will find out who dared to ignore my order!" Roxanne nodded profusely.
She was about to reveal Farwell Group's involvement but changed her mind. It seemed Farwell Group hadn't informed the Queen family, at least not Jonathan or Old Mr. Queen. If she mentioned it now, she feared they might reconsider their relationship with Farwell Group. Fortunately, she'd been tactful, and neither Jonathan nor Old Mr. Queen pressed the issue.
Lunch was unpleasant due to the incident. Afterward, Roxanne hastily bid them farewell and rushed to the research institute. Colby was leaving the facility when he spotted her.
"What happened? What did the Queen family say?" he asked.
Roxanne was more relaxed now. "It must be a misunderstanding. Mr. Queen promised to investigate, so let's wait. They'll resume supplying the medicinal herbs after the investigation."
Colby remained skeptical. "The investigation will take time. Aren't you worried it's just an excuse?"
Roxanne's brows furrowed in resignation. "What else can we do? It's too late to contact other suppliers. We have no choice but to rely on Queen Group. Even if Jonathan uses the investigation as an excuse, at least Old Mr. Queen trusts me."
Colby finally sighed in relief. "If the investigation reveals a misunderstanding, that's great. But if even Queen Group is threatened, no supplier in Horington will dare work with us."
Alfred's word eased their anxiety. After greeting Colby, Roxanne returned to her office, her smile fading as she closed the door. Sonya wanted her to leave Horington, unaware Roxanne was there for the research institute. She wouldn't let the institute suffer because of her and leave without looking back. She'd solved the herb supply problem for now, but what would Sonya do next? Sonya had blocked her number, preventing contact.
Roxanne was in a dilemma when Harvey called. Composing herself, she answered.
"Roxanne, how are things in Chanaea?" Harvey asked cheerfully. "I'm waiting for your return. I've prepared a project for you." He assumed the institute was thriving and the handover would be easy.
Feeling guilty, Roxanne explained, "I'm sorry, Professor Lambert. Something unexpected happened at the institute, so I can't return anytime soon."
Harvey frowned. "Do you need my help?"
Roxanne shook her head. "It's all right. I can handle it. I'll contact you after it's resolved." Knowing her well, Harvey didn't press further. They exchanged pleasantries before disconnecting.
