Chapter 588

Aubree was finally released from the hospital after a month-long stay. Lucian had visited only for a few days at his mother's behest, then ceased contact. She contacted him several times, but he consistently used work as an excuse to avoid her.

Two days prior, friends whose children attended Essie's kindergarten visited. They informed Aubree that Lucian and Roxanne were performing in a production of Sleeping Beauty, showing her photographs. The pictures depicted Lucian, in a princely costume, gazing longingly at Roxanne, who lay on a wooden bed. Further images showed him leaning in to kiss her.

Aubree pushed the phone away, unable to bear the sight. Her rage flared; Roxanne had forgotten the "lesson" Aubree believed she'd taught her. The audacity! Lucian acting with herโ€”something unthinkable before Roxanne's return. Since then, Lucian had taken Essie to plant trees, played with herโ€”Aubree feared a reconciliation was possible.

Her anger threatened to consume her. "Just you wait, Roxanne!" she gritted, a dark expression hardening her features in the empty ward.

Sonya entered, noticing Aubree's frown. "What's wrong, Aubree?" she asked, concerned. Sonya, feeling remorse and affection for Aubree, had cared for her throughout her hospital stay, even preventing a visit from the Pearsons on her discharge day.

Guilt flickered in Aubree's eyes. She forced a smile. "Nothing. I'm just reluctant to leave; I'll miss seeing you every day."

Sonya's heart warmed. She patted Aubree's shoulder. "Come visit me anytime. But take care of yourself."

Aubree nodded, distracted.

"Let's go. The paperwork's done. Go home and don't worry your parents," Sonya urged.

Aubree followed her to the car. "Do you know what Lucian's been busy with lately, Mrs. Farwell?" she asked.

Sonya's brow furrowed at the mention of her son. "His company, or Essie," she replied apologetically.

"And the past two days?" Aubree pressed.

"I'm unsure. You could call him. He shouldn't be swamped with work now. You've just left the hospital; he should at least see you."

Aubree's annoyance flared, though she masked it with polite obedience. "Okay. I'll call him later."
