Chapter 590
โI should ask you to stay for a meal, but Lysa hasnโt returned yet, and my leg is still injured, so forget it,โ Roxanne stubbornly insisted, continuing to urge Lucianโs departure. โI think youโre quite busy. Since you have other things to attend to, I donโt think you should waste your time here.โ
As she finished, she felt the intensity of his gaze, a simmering anger that seemed to consume her. Her heart clenched, wondering what he would do.
Lucian stared at her for a long moment before a short, humorless sound escaped him. โYou saw that?โ
They both knew what she had seen.
Roxanneโs expression faltered. Silence hung briefly in the air before she said, โIt must be important if Ms. Pearson is looking for you at this hour. You should meet her as soon as possible.โ
โAnd what about you, if I go?โ Lucian asked, his voice deep.
A strange feeling stirred within her. Aubree is his fiancรฉe, and he has loved her for years. How could she ever compare? It felt like a deliberate slight.
Dismissing the thought, she regained her composure. โMy injury is nearly healed. Besides, Iโm in my own house. I can wait for Lysa. Thereโs no need for you to worry, Mr. Farwell.โ
Despite her clear dismissal, Lucian remained.
Roxanne frowned, striving for calm. โBesides, I donโt think itโs appropriate for you to stay here in my house while your fiancรฉe waits for you.โ
His eyebrows furrowed, the anger in his eyes receding. He raised an eyebrow. โAre youโฆ jealous, Ms. Jarvis?โ
The question stunned her. Jealous? Did he even hear himself? What kind of relationship did he think they had? Or did he still remember her drunken wordsโฆ?
Regaining her senses, Roxanne stared at him, her expression complex. โAre you mocking me, Mr. Farwell?โ
His frown deepened; he didnโt understand her sudden accusation.
They stared at each other. The image of her intoxicated state that night surfaced in his mind. Sheโs misunderstanding me again.
An odd feeling tugged at his heart as the memory played out. He didnโt want to revisit that night.
โIn any case, Iโm not leaving. Essie was eager to see you, so Iโve asked Cayden to pick her up. Iโll wait for her here.โ Lucian looked away, rising and settling into an armchair. He pulled out his phone and resumed work, his expression clearly indicating โdo not disturb.โ
He feared that continuing the conversation would lead Roxanne back to the events of six years agoโthe time she loved him most, a period he desperately wanted to forget.
Roxanne wanted to speak, but hearing Estella was coming, and seeing his demeanor, she remained silent, wrestling with her complex emotions.
A tense quiet settled over the living room. Meanwhile, Aubreeโs frown deepened as she stared at the disconnected call, wondering what had happened. Even when Lucian rejected her, he usually answered.
Why had he hung up today? Was he with that woman?
The thought twisted her face into a mask of misery.
