Chapter 635
More people expressed their amity toward Roxanne and Larry. The room's ambiance quickly became harmonious and relaxed.
Jack waited, then, seeing Roxanne and Larry return to their seats, introduced the other doctors. Each had significant medical achievements, so brief introductions sufficed. Mutual respect, and anticipation of their collaboration, filled the room.
With formalities concluded, the attendees shifted to lighter conversation, engaging with familiar colleagues. Despite his dislike of socializing, Jack, wine glass in hand, moved to the center of the gathering. Roxanne and Larry clinked glasses with the senior attendees before returning to their seats. "It looks like the collaboration will go well," Larry commented, grinning.
Roxanne nodded, glancing at Jack amidst the crowd. He deserved the credit for creating such a pleasant atmosphere. I thought he was just a good doctor; I didn't think heโd be such a capable leader. Then again, it's no surprise. If the future heir of the great Damaris family couldn't control a crowd like this, Old Mr. Damaris wouldn't approve.
As the happy chatter continued, the banquet hall's door burst open. The crowd turned to see a group of young, aristocratic women entering. The leader wore a long, pure white off-the-shoulder fishtail dress; her air of refinement was somewhat ambiguous at a glance.
"Jack! What a coincidence!" the woman greeted coyly, approaching him. "Indeed, Jessica," Jack replied with a polite smile. The Damaris and Hightower families enjoyed good relations; Jessica Hightower, the eldest daughter, was two years older than Jack, and they had been friendly in recent years.
Nevertheless, Jack was slightly displeased by her abrupt entrance with her companions. This was a banquet for the Damaris family's future allies, an official event. Jessica's arrival was untimely. He kept these thoughts to himself. "This is...?" someone asked, confused.
Jack calmly introduced her: "This is Jessica Hightower, heiress of the Hightower family."
With a grin, Jessica waved. "I'm at a party with my friends next door, and heard Jack was here, so I thought I'd say hello. I hope I'm not intruding!"
Knowing Jack, and recalling their experience with Roxanne and Larry, the crowd smiled, showing no discourtesy.
Suddenly, someone nudged Jessica toward Roxanne. Jessica's expression instantly changed. What is such a pretty girl like her doing here? And she's sitting next to Jack!
