Chapter 688

Roxanne was unaware of Aubree and her mother's plans. She had spent the entire day with the children and Lucian, falling asleep immediately upon lying down. The next day, a ringing phone roused her. Still drowsy, she answered without checking the caller ID.

"Ms. Jarvis, are you awake? I have something requiring your attention," Jack's voice announced.

Recognizing his voice, Roxanne's alertness sharpened. "Has something happened?" she asked. She rarely interacted with Jack personally, knowing his calls usually pertained to business or medical mattersโ€”neither to be taken lightly.

"Do you remember Jamie? The child from the medical consultation?" Jack began.

Roxanne's expression grew serious. "Yes. What's happened?" She recalled the incident where Daniel had frightened Jamie, causing heart palpitations and unconsciousness. Roxanne's intervention had saved him, leaving a lasting impression.

"The orphanage contacted me. Jamie has a high fever and is hospitalized. Since you handled his consultation, I thought you might be most familiar with the situation. If you have time, could you go see him?" Jack asked politely.

Roxanne readily agreed. "Of course. Which hospital? I'll go right away."

"I'm nearby; I can pick you up," Jack offered.

After a brief moment's consideration, Roxanne accepted. She showered quickly, changed clothes, and hurried downstairs. Archie and Benny, awakened by the sound of the closing door, rushed down to find their mother leaving in a hurry. "Mommy? Where are you going?" they asked.

Roxanne remembered them. She patted their heads. "A little boy from the orphanage is sick, and I need to see him. I don't have time to take you to kindergarten today. I'll help you get permission to stay home."

Worried, the boys immediately nodded. "You must do your best to treat him!"

Roxanne smiled and nodded. As she prepared to leave, a car horn blared outside.

"That must be Jack," she said.

She left with the boys trailing behind her. Jack, already at the driveway, was surprised to see them. He knew Roxanne had children but had never met them before. Despite their sleepy appearance, the boys were well-behaved, politely waving to Jack as they followed their mother.
