Chapter 692: Absolutely Unacceptable
Roxanne and Jack arrived at the hospital, where the orphanage director was waiting. He quickly guided them to Jamie's ward. A doctor, seemingly employed by the Damaris family, was attending to Jamie. He greeted Jack, and upon inquiry about Jamie's condition, replied, "He's running a high fever and has diarrhea. I'm still trying to reach a diagnosis," his expression troubled.
Jack glanced at Roxanne, whose gaze remained fixed on Jamie's pale face. She nodded to Jack, silently indicating her readiness to treat him. Jack introduced Roxanne to the doctor as Dr. Jarvis, explaining her previous involvement in Jamie's care. The doctor stepped aside, allowing Roxanne access.
With a worried frown, Roxanne examined Jamie's pulse. Despite his delirium, he recognized her and offered a weak smile. Roxanne's heart ached at his bravery. "Don't worry," she reassured him softly, "I'll treat you." Jamie nodded obediently. Afraid of tears, Roxanne averted her gaze, focusing on his treatment. She noted his significant weight loss since their last consultation, the intensity of his fever, and his pallid complexion. Seeing him so ill deeply distressed her.
After taking his pulse, Roxanne's frown deepened. Confusion and panic flickered in her eyes. She couldn't determine the cause of his illness.
Jack, noticing her distress, stepped forward, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Calm down," he said. "Anxiety can cloud judgment. If you can't immediately diagnose him, let's focus on stabilizing his condition to prevent further deterioration." He knew Jamie's condition was critical.
Jack's words steadied Roxanne. She realized her emotional response was unacceptable. "Ms. Jarvis..." Jamie called weakly.
Roxanne quickly turned to him. "I'm here. What is it? Are you feeling unwell?"
Jamie shook his head. "I believe in you... You treated me last time..."
His words struck Roxanne deeply. With reddened eyes, she choked back a sob. "Yes, I'll do my best! You'll get better!" Jamie smiled and nodded.
