Chapter 694: Having Lunch With Me

The tension in the ward lifted the moment a treatment plan was found. Jamie flashed Roxanne a grateful smile upon hearing he would soon recover. “Thanks, Ms. Jarvis,” he whispered.

Roxanne’s expression softened. “I’m just doing my job; no need to thank me. You must have had a rough time.”

Jamie nodded shyly, anxiety evident on his face. This was the first time someone outside the orphanage had shown him genuine concern. And she was pretty, reminding him of his mother.

Roxanne gently patted his head. “I’ve prescribed some medication. Take it as instructed, and you’ll get better quickly. Eat properly after discharge. I know it’s difficult, but you must try. Otherwise, you’ll suffer again. Understood?”

Jamie nodded obediently. Roxanne chuckled with relief at his compliance. Jack, watching her patiently comfort Jamie, felt his heart skip a beat.

The orphanage director returned with the medication, profusely thanking them both. Roxanne smiled faintly. “We were just doing our job. You must have it tough looking after all these children.”

She pulled out cash from her wallet. “I didn’t bring much, leaving in a hurry. Use this for Jamie’s food; it'll help replenish his nutrients. Call if the orphanage needs anything.”

“You’ve already done so much! I can’t accept your money. I should be thanking you!” the director protested.

Roxanne pressed the money into his hand. “I’m a mother of two; I can’t bear to see children suffer. Consider this a small act of motherly love.”

The director started to speak, but Roxanne smoothly changed the subject to Jamie’s medication. He ultimately accepted the money.

After giving final instructions, Roxanne said goodbye and left with Jack.

“Thank you for your guidance, Mr. Damaris. Without your help, I’d still be struggling with the prescription,” Roxanne said gratefully as they walked.

Jack arched an eyebrow. “I was just doing my job.”

Roxanne smiled.

“However…” Jack added.

Roxanne tensed. “What is it? Is there an issue with Jamie’s condition?”

“While I was doing my job, I can’t stop you from expressing gratitude. ‘Thanks’ feels insufficient.”

Roxanne frowned, recognizing the phrasing, though she couldn’t place it. She knew she needed to respond.

“You’re right, Mr. Damaris. I should have realized. Since it’s almost noon, how about lunch with me?” she asked.
