Chapter 793: A Misunderstanding
After sensing something was amiss, Roxanne pressed her lips together, remaining silent. Madilyn watched the tension rise between Roxanne and Lucian, choosing to wait quietly in the car. However, her thoughts wandered.
Lucian's actions made her question everything. If Roxanne hadn't told her he wanted her back, she never would have believed he was capable of such a thing. His behavior didn't seem like he was trying to win favor; it was more like he was reclaiming his territory. The more Madilyn observed them, the more she suspected Lucian was simply trying to regain lost ground.
"Going out?" Lucian's cold glance at Roxanne masked his anger. He already knew the answer.
Roxanne felt a pang of guilt when their eyes met. But remembering the work-related nature of her meeting with Jack, her confidence returned. "There's a contract-signing ceremony I must attend shortly. I'm afraid I don't have time for you, Mr. Farwell. I hope you understand."
A slight crease appeared between Lucian's brows as he pressed, "Is it with Jack?"
Roxanne was startled. "How did you know?" She'd only received notice last night, and Lucian had no connection to the project. The children, overhearing from the living room, looked guilty and quietly resumed playing with their Legos.
Roxanne didn't suspect her children. Instead, she wondered if Lucian was investigating her again. He seemed to read her thoughts, his gaze darkening. "I have my ways."
His words only fueled her suspicion. Wariness flickered in her eyes. "I don't care how you found out, but I'm leaving. I'd appreciate it if you left as well."
"What if I refuse? I'm here to stop you from attending that contract signing." His expression turned sullen, his tone icy. He was trying to prevent her meeting with Jack.
Roxanne felt he was being unreasonable. "Are you done, Lucian? I'm only doing my job. What's the matter with you?"
A smile played on Lucian's lips at her spirited response. "That so-called job, Ms. Jarvis, is it poaching from me?"
Roxanne frowned, confused. As far as she knew, the ceremony was between the Damaris and Herbscape Groups. What did Lucian have to do with it?
"Herbscape Group initially intended to sign with Farwell Group. Damaris Group must have interfered, causing them to back out at the last minute. Their methods displeased me, so I won't let their ceremony proceed without a hitch," Lucian explained, his expression serious.
For a few seconds, Roxanne stared at him suspiciously, suspecting he was making excuses. Yet, there was nothing in his expression to suggest he was lying. A strange feeling washed over her as the truth dawned. Lucian's dissatisfaction with Jack stemmed from business rivalry, not from her.
Roxanne had been worried that Lucian's misunderstanding would cause trouble for Jack. It turned out she was the one who had completely misunderstood the situation.
