Chapter 794: What You Are Doing Is Pointless

A flash of self-mockery crossed Roxanne’s eyes. She’d worried Lucian might have trouble with Jack because of her, but she’d been wrong. Lucian's trouble stemmed from her, because of Jack. Seeing her expression change, Lucian realized his words might have been too suggestive. He frowned, preparing an explanation, but Roxanne spoke first.

“Since it’s business-related, you can reason with Mr. Damaris yourself. I’m merely a researcher; my words and presence hold little weight. The ceremony will proceed without me.”

A hint of mockery tinged her gaze as she continued, “I'm an insignificant member of the project. Missing the ceremony will make my colleagues think I'm unsociable, causing future problems. Mr. Farwell, please don’t put me in this position.”

Lucian’s frown deepened. She’d misunderstood him completely. “That’s not what I meant!” he declared.

Roxanne scoffed. “Then what did you mean, Mr. Farwell? Are you treating me as a punching bag because you lost a business deal?”

Anger narrowed Lucian’s eyes. Caught in the heat of the moment, he couldn't explain himself. He grabbed her wrist, unwilling to let her go.

Roxanne struggled, but Lucian was much stronger. “Lucian Farwell, what you’re doing is pointless!” she glared, frustrated.

Lucian opened his mouth, but no appeasing words came. “You can’t go,” he said curtly.

Tension hung heavy between them. Madilyn, parked in her courtyard, watched from afar. Seeing her former husband and wife arguing, her heart tightened. She didn’t want to intrude, but feared Roxanne would be bullied.

Madilyn hurried to them. Arriving at Roxanne's door, she felt awkward but pretended she hadn't been watching. “Roxanne, what happened?”

Lucian’s brow furrowed; he loosened his grip as Madilyn approached, allowing Roxanne to break free. Roxanne walked past Lucian, saying to Madilyn, “You came just in time. I’m leaving. Archie and Benny are in your care.”

Without another glance at Lucian, Roxanne drove off to meet Jack. Madilyn watched her go, then turned to Lucian, her face falling. She’d come to rescue Roxanne, only to have her leave and leave her with a mess!

Trying to appear calm, Madilyn cleared her throat. “Mr. Farwell, what are—”

Lucian turned, his gloomy expression silencing her. He strode past her and left in his car. Only after his car disappeared did Madilyn breathe a sigh of relief.
