Chapter 843: Refuse to Acquire Them
Meanwhile, at the Damaris residence, Jack left the study after speaking with Hector. Returning to his room, the butler approached him with a phone. "Mr. Damaris, a call for you."
Half an hour earlier, Jack's phone had been ringing incessantly. However, the butler had waited to interrupt until after Jack's conversation with his grandfather.
Jack nodded, his brow furrowing slightly at the caller ID: Dean Lacroix, CEO of Herbscape Group. Why was he calling so late? The butler explained, "He's been calling for half an hour."
Jack's heart sank. He answered with a frown. Before he could speak, Dean's panicked voice filled the receiver.
"Mr. Damaris, thank goodness! Herbscape Group is in trouble! Please help us! You're the only one I can think of!"
Dean, had he known Jack's address, would have arrived at the Damaris residence hours ago.
Puzzled, Jack asked, "What happened?" He had been oblivious to the unfolding online disaster.
Dean was incredulous at Jack's ignorance. He had no time for explanations.
"Someone published our past scandals online, and it's going viral. The State Taxation Administration and International Trade Administration are sending investigators!" He pleaded, "Someone's attacking us, but I can't figure out who. Please help!"
Jack's frown deepened at the mention of the government agencies. He had chosen to collaborate with Herbscape Group because of their size in Horington, after thorough investigations had indicated their past scandals were well-concealed. He would not have partnered with them otherwise.
Now, they were embroiled in a major scandal.
Dean's anxiety grew with Jack's silence. Sweating profusely, he pleaded, "Mr. Damaris, this benefits us both! We're collaborators, and Herbscape supplies herbs for your family's new project. If something happens to us, your project will be jeopardized. We're in this together!"
The veiled threat in his plea was clear.
Jack narrowed his eyes, replying coldly, "Understood. I'll decide after assessing the situation." He hung up before Dean could respond.
Dean realized his mistake as the call ended. Regret washed over him. If he had offended Jack, losing his help, he would have to approach Farwell Groupโa prospect he deeply regretted.
He had broken his contract with Farwell Group at the last minute, despite their favorable terms. Returning now, with Herbscape's damaged reputation, meant he would have no leverage for renegotiation. In fact, Farwell Group might very well refuse to acquire them.
