James had no choice. His family, unwilling to improve, simply wanted to coast on their success. A knock sounded. "David, answer the door," Gladys said. David, uninterested, glanced at Alyssa. "Babe, you do it." Alyssa, too lazy to move, looked at James. "You go, James."
James, depressed by their laziness, said nothing and opened the door. An elderly man, appearing to be in his seventies or eighties, stood there. Simply dressed, he carried several bottles of fine wine.
"W-who are you?" James asked, curious.
"Y-you must be James. I'm Thea's granduncle."
"Oh, come in," James replied, inviting Trevor Callahan inside.
The family's faces darkened at Trevor's entrance. "What are you doing here?" Gladys asked coldly.
Trevor approached, offering the wine. "Gladys," he began, but she interrupted. "Take it away. We don't want it," she said agitatedly. James was confused by their bizarre reactions. He wondered, When did Lex have a younger brother? How have I never met him, despite being with the Callahans so long?
Trevor noticed Thea and looked at her hopefully. "Thea, I'm desperate. You're Eternality's chairman; you have the most authority. My factory is failing; I can't take new orders, and I'm over ten million dollars in debt, including employee salaries." He knelt. "Please, for family, help Pacific Group."
Thea stood and helped him up. "Granduncle, what are you doing? Get up." David scolded her. "Thea, what are you doing? Have you forgotten what Grandpa said? Never speak to Trevor again!"
Thea looked helpless. She glanced at Trevor. "Granduncle, I can't help you. Even if I were chairman, I wouldn't dare."
Trevor retreated, his pride wounded, but desperation had driven him to this. Disappointed, he left.
"Is that really your granduncle, Thea? Why haven't I seen him before?" James asked.
"He is. But twenty years ago, he clashed with my grandfather and left Eternality. He started Pacific Manufacturing. They severed ties, and our families haven't spoken since."
"I see," James said, surprised by the Callahan family history.
Gladys said, "That's enough, Thea. Ignore him. The old men would be furious if they knew. You have no idea how fiercely they fought."
James, after considering, smiled. "Thea, I think this is a great opportunity."
"Huh?" Thea looked at him.
"I don't know about Pacific Group, but it's likely a large, established manufacturer with resources. We just need capital and new orders to revitalize it. That's far easier than starting from scratch."
"Y-you mean…?" Thea finally understood.
"You mean I should get money and take over Granduncle's company?"
"Nonsense! Our families are estranged. Lex will reclaim our shares if he finds out. It's almost the end of the month; our dividend is coming. Don't cause trouble."
James said, "Mom, do you still want to rely on Lex? Howard's family will try to get those shares. Listen to me. I'll find the money. The Callahans don't respect Thea; let's use our connections to do this ourselves."
