Presuming Charlie Wade was joking, Claire Wilson didn't take him seriously. She stepped aside and called Miss Young. The call was quickly answered.
Doris's pleasant voice came from the other end. "Hello, Miss Wilson."
"Hi, Miss Young. I have a favor to ask," Claire Wilson said timidly.
"Okay, what is it?" Doris replied.
Claire Wilson rehearsed the sentence in her head, taking a deep breath before saying determinedly, "May I inquire if the chairman is available tomorrow evening? My family is hosting a banquet to celebrate our collaboration with the Emgrand Team. I hope the chairman will accept my invitation."
Silence followed before Doris spoke again. "Miss Wilson, I'm sorry, but I can't decide on behalf of the chairman. Perhaps I could ask him for you? Would that be alright?"
After the call ended, Claire Wilson held her phone nervously, awaiting a reply. It was Doris who called to ask for his opinion.
He pretended to answer calmly, "Yes?"
As expected, Doris's voice came from the phone. "Mr. Wade, the Wilson Group is holding a reception tomorrow evening. I'd like to ask if you would attend the banquet."
Charlie Wade responded, "Oh, is that so? Okay, I will… Alright, that's it, bye…"
He quickly hung up, muttering, "These marketing spam calls are so frustrating…"
Claire Wilson was skeptical, but soon, her phone rang again. Doris's voice echoed into her ear. "Hello, Miss Wilson, our chairman has accepted your invitation! He'll be there!"
"Please thank the chairman for me…" Claire Wilson sputtered in shock, followed by an excited shriek. She hadn't expected the chairman to agree.
She rushed to Lady Wilson, exclaiming happily, "Grandma! The chairman of the Emgrand Team has agreed to come!"
"Really!?" Lady Wilson was overjoyed.
She immediately rallied the family. "Quick, make the necessary preparations! Book the most luxurious hotel, order the finest food and drinks! Let's make this a truly memorable welcome for the Emgrand chairman!"
"Next, call all the major companies in the city and invite them to our reception! Tell them the Emgrand chairman will be there!"
The office buzzed with activity as everyone made calls, spreading the news like wildfire throughout Aurouss Hill. In a flash, everyone knew about the Wilson Group's reception and the surprising appearance of the Emgrand chairman.
Lady Wilson answered numerous calls with a wide smile. She was ecstatic, knowing that after tomorrow's banquet, the Wilson family would become one of the most influential in Aurouss Hill. She laughed, "Okay, that's it for today. Begin preparing for tomorrow's banquet. Dismissed!"
After the meeting, Lady Wilson returned to her office, followed by Harold.
"Grandma, do you really intend to appoint Claire Wilson as director?" Harold asked cautiously.
Lady Wilson frowned. "I promised Claire Wilson the position; why shouldn't I appoint her?"
"Granny, you can't make her the director!"
"Why? She secured a lucrative contract. Her contribution is significant, and she deserves it."
"She only won the Emgrand contract because Wendell from the Jones family helped her. I heard he visited her the other day, and Emgrand signed with us today."
Lady Wilson's face darkened. "Is that true?"
Harold stated firmly, "Of course it's true! Wendell visited Claire Wilson last night. You can investigate it."
He continued, "Grandmother, Claire Wilson is married. If the truth comes out—if people learn this is how we won the contract—what will they say about the Wilson family? What will they say about you?"
Lady Wilson's frown deepened, believing Harold's claim. She knew of Wendell's feelings towards Claire Wilson. He'd given her an expensive jade amulet on her birthday. This might explain Claire Wilson's success in securing the sixty-million-dollar contract.
Seeing the change in Lady Wilson's expression, Harold pressed on, "If you appoint such a controversial woman as director, our reputation will be tarnished! You should choose someone else and give them credit for the contract. A man would be the best choice to avoid gossip!"
Lady Wilson nodded, considering his suggestion. She believed most of what Harold said. Considering the circumstances, she should choose another candidate to quell the rumors. If the public learned Claire Wilson won the contract through an affair, she could claim the new director secured it.
Furthermore, the old lady was biased; she didn't like Claire Wilson. She was a traditional woman and didn't like Claire's growing influence within the family. She needed to stop Claire's advancement to secure the family's position.
She looked at Harold and said coldly, "Harold, from now on, you will listen to me. Do as I say, and don't do what I tell you not to. Do you understand?"
Harold stood tall, pledging his loyalty. "Don't worry, Granny, I'll follow your orders. I'll go wherever you point, I'll do whatever you say!"
"Okay," Lady Wilson replied. "At the reception tomorrow, I'll announce you as the new director, fully responsible for the Emgrand Group project. But remember, you must be obedient and loyal. I can elevate you, but I can also bring you down!"
Harold shrieked happily. "Don't worry, Grandma! I'll be a good boy!"
