The Amazing Son-in-Law: Chapters 931-935
Chapter 931
Seeing Charlie Wade, Elaine Ma's heart filled with hatred. Although she accepted the police's statement, she believed Charlie was merely a pawn for the transnational criminals, not a deliberate participant in the fake bank card scheme. Nevertheless, her troubles stemmed from his card. Had it not been for his card, she wouldn't have suffered these indignities, so she naturally blamed Charlie the most. Therefore, seeing him, she couldn't hide her animosity. Then, the police officer's outburst startled her. The thought of constant police scrutiny made Elaine deeply uncomfortable. She was helpless, trapped in this immense turmoil. She suppressed her hatred for Charlie and calmed herself.
Seeing her compliance, the police officer asked Charlie, "You're her son-in-law, right?"
Charlie nodded. "I am."
The officer said, "Okay, then sign this document acknowledging you've taken her into your care."
Charlie signed the document and asked, "Can I go now?"
The officer nodded. "Yes, you can go."
Charlie said to his mother-in-law, "Mom, let's go. I'll take you to the hospital."
Elaine Ma gritted her teeth but dared not retaliate openly. Instead, she feigned compliance, saying, "Oh, my dear son-in-law, help me; I can't move my leg."
Charlie, enduring the stench emanating from her, helped her up. Elaine's leg throbbed painfully with the slightest movement, but she was different now. The previous Elaine, unscathed and untroubled, had never suffered such hardship. Two days of brutal beatings in the detention center had hardened her. The pain of a broken leg paled in comparison to her ordeal. She thought of a song about enduring hardship, concluding that escaping the nightmare of detention was worth any physical pain, even a broken leg.
Charlie helped Elaine out of the detention center. An old Jetta taxi, the same one theyโd arrived in, waited outside. "Mom, let's get in the car," Charlie said.
Elaine was devastated at the sight of the dilapidated taxi. After enduring so much, she expected a better ride home. She deserved her husband's BMW 530 at the very least! Instead, she was relegated to this beat-up rental. Rage boiled inside her, directed at Jacob Wilson and Charlie. However, the bank card and the taxi kept her from lashing out at Charlie. She seethed with suppressed fury. Resigned, she climbed into the taxi with Charlie's support.
Once inside, Charlie told the driver, "People's Hospital emergency room, please."
Chapter 932
The driver sped to People's Hospital. Charlie, sitting in the passenger seat, told Elaine, "Mom, I've called Claire. She's on her way to the hospital. We'll get your leg seen to."
Elaine snorted bitterly, turning her face to the window. "Having a son-in-law like you is useless; you only cause trouble!"
Charlie pressed, "Mom, what do you mean? When did I cause you trouble?"
Elaine glared at him through the rearview mirror. "Don't ask! Think about it yourself!" Warned repeatedly by the police, she dared not openly berate Charlie, resorting instead to veiled anger.
Charlie, aware of his mother-in-law's nature, feigned ignorance. "Excuse me, I really can't think of what trouble I've caused."
Elaine's chest heaved with anger, words bubbling to her lips, only to be swallowed. She shifted the focus to Jacob, asking, "Where did Dad go partying? When did he leave?"
Charlie replied, "This morning. I didn't ask who was there." He knew his mother-in-law would be furious if she learned about his father-in-law's reunion with his first love and classmates, so he played dumb.
Elaine cursed, "Didn't they just get together? Again? It seems he's lived a lavish life while I was in detention!"
She immediately called Jacob.
Chapter 933
Jacob was at the Glorious Club, reveling with Matilda and old classmates. He was in high spirits; no one dared to mock him anymore. Oscar, mindful of Charlie's face, personally served Jacob and his friends โ a rare sight in Aurous Hill. His classmates admired him. After a hearty lunch, Matilda reserved a private karaoke room, and they began singing.
The Glorious Club boasted the best KTV facilities in Aurous Hill, spacious and luxurious. The only downside was the large group; many songs were queued.
Jacob specifically requested a duet with Matilda โ "My Confidant Lover." The old classmates roared with amusement at the song choice and his invitation to Matilda. They playfully teased him about his intentions and hinted at their unspoken feelings. Jacob was elated.
He didn't realize his nightmare was about to begin.
Chapter 934
Though Matilda blushed, she accepted the microphone, playfully commenting that she'd sing with anyone willing. Greyson felt uncomfortable that Jacob, a married man, openly invited his "goddess" to sing a love song, but considering Charlie's influence, he held his tongue.
Jacob, beaming, stole glances at Matilda, his heart aflutter. Matilda noticed his infatuation and blushed.
The song began. Matilda sang beautifully, enchanting the old men. Jacob got goosebumps. The classmates applauded thunderously.
As Jacob prepared to sing his part, his phone vibrated. It was his wife. His mood plummeted. Elaine, missing for two days with her phone off, was calling. She must be back. Panic seized him. His good times were over. His classmates urged him to sing, while Matilda inquired about his silence. He knew he had to answer Elaine, aware of her wrath if he ignored her call.
Chapter 935
He answered, and Elaine's roar filled his ear: "Jacob Wilson, you're going to die! I've been missing for two days and nights, and you were partying? You're heartless!"
Jacob's heart sank. It was over; Elaine was back! His two days of bliss were gone! He was mortified. Elaine demanded to know who he was partying with and accused him of singing while she was in peril. Jacob explained he was with old classmates.
Elaine screamed, "I have a broken leg and need to go to the hospital! Get here immediately, or else!"
Jacob, terrified, promised to come immediately and hung up. He quickly told Matilda he had an emergency and left, leaving Greyson to sing with Matilda. As he fled the club, Jacob cursed his fate, lamenting Elaine's timely return and wishing she'd disappear like Hannah. He sped to People's Hospital in his BMW.
Claire Wilson, also heading to the hospital, was worried sick about her mother's broken leg and her ordeal. Elaine, clutching her leg, angrily urged the taxi driver to speed up, threatening him with complaints and unemployment. The driver refused, citing speed limits and safety regulations. Elaine then threatened to report him for sexual harassment, which prompted a sarcastic retort about her appearance. The driver eventually pulled over and told her to get out, ending their ride abruptly, much to Charlie's amusement. Elaine, exasperated, instructed Charlie to hail another taxi.
