The Amazing Son-in-Law: Chapters 981-985
Chapter 981
The invoice was the only proof of reimbursement. Jeff was furious when he learned Charlie Wade had it. He’d been waiting to submit the invoice for reimbursement. Without it, Charlie wouldn't be paid for the meal, and Jeff would lose $100,000. Angrily, he confronted Charlie: “Charlie Wade, did you get the invoice? Bring it to me!”
Charlie responded calmly, “This meal is on us. What about my invoice? I have $100,000 riding on this, remember?”
Jeff sputtered, “You don’t work or own a company. Why do you need an invoice?”
Charlie smiled, “Many restaurants avoid issuing invoices to evade taxes. Without invoices, the tax authorities don’t know their income.” He then addressed the group, “As law-abiding citizens, paying taxes is our duty. We should ensure businesses comply with tax laws.”
Everyone nodded. Lisa added, “Restaurants are notorious for tax evasion. They must issue invoices to pay taxes.” William agreed, “The catering industry is highly profitable; tax evasion is unacceptable.” He then jokingly said, “You can also negotiate with the restaurant. If they don’t issue an invoice, maybe they'll give you a discount or free drinks. I always ask for something extra when this happens.”
Charlie chuckled, “William, you're clever! I should learn from you!”
William, pleased with the compliment, boasted, “That's the wisdom of life.”
Jeff, scowling, demanded, “Stop the nonsense! Give me the invoice!”
Charlie retorted, “Why? Is it more useful to you than to me? We’re here for dinner; you want to claim reimbursement?”
Jeff, flustered, stammered, “I… I wanted the invoice so the hotel pays taxes!”
Charlie nodded, giving a thumbs-up. “Jeff, you're a responsible citizen! Not bad!” He produced the invoice. “It’s in my name, so it’s not reimbursable, but the restaurant still pays taxes. They owe $200,000 in taxes on this meal.”
Jeff exclaimed, “Why did you use your name?!” He was furious; the invoice was useless for reimbursement.
Charlie smiled, “You didn’t specify whose name should be on it. Besides, we each paid half. First come, first served.” He then dramatically tore up the invoice. “No one needs an invoice. This meal’s on us.”
Jeff watched in horror as his $100,000 meal vanished.
Chapter 982
Jeff felt devastated. He'd hoped to make $100,000, but instead lost it. He’d recently bought a Mercedes-Benz. He wished he could kill Charlie Wade.
Charlie poured champagne, offering it to Jeff. “Cheers, Brother Jeff.”
Jeff refused. Charlie said, “Don’t be angry. You bought the wine; don’t waste it.”
Jeff trembled with rage. He’d spent $100,000 on the meal! He felt like he’d gone bankrupt. Tears welled up, and he angrily drank the champagne. He had to figure out how to make money. He considered borrowing money from loan apps and using his savings to recoup his losses. He needed $600,000. He prayed William would help.
Chapter 983
After dealing with Jeff, Charlie asked Mrs. Lewis about the orphanage.
Mrs. Lewis explained, “Things are tough. There are more children, and our finances are strained. We've taken in many rescued children; the cost of milk powder is high. The staff are struggling, and we're applying for funding…”
Charlie, remembering the children, decided to donate. He announced, “Mrs. Lewis, I’ll donate $1 million!”
Everyone was shocked. Jeff scoffed, “You’re bragging! A million? You’d have to rob a bank!”
Charlie retorted, “I said it, I’ll do it. Unlike you, I won't fake a car accident!”
Jeff, still unconvinced, sneered, “A live-in son-in-law, dependent on his wife? How can you afford a million?”
Harry chimed in, “Don’t put on a show, Charlie Wade. Don’t go bankrupt pretending to be rich!”
Charlie replied, “Whether I rob a bank or not is none of your business. I can afford it. How much will you donate?”
Jeff brashly stated, “If you donate $1 million, I’ll donate $10 million.”
Everyone laughed, believing Charlie was bluffing. Only Mrs. Lewis, Lisa, and Claire believed him. Claire suspected Charlie was secretly performing feng shui again. Charlie admitted he’d charged $1 million for a job. (Claire didn't know he'd actually received $10 million.)
Chapter 984
Charlie wanted to make the donation believable, so he proposed a video recording to prove his donation and Jeff's wager. He stated publicly that he would donate $1 million and Jeff would donate $10 million if he did.
Jeff, sure of Charlie's bluff, accepted. Charlie produced two checks, one for $1 million. He gave it to Mrs. Lewis.
Jeff scoffed, calling it a piece of paper. He didn't know how to verify the check's authenticity. Charlie called Paul, who confirmed he had made a large sum donation, and then wired $2 million to the orphanage's account (his own donation plus $1 million to compensate for lost check).
Chapter 985
Charlie was surprised by Paul's extra million. He informed Mrs. Lewis that $2 million had been donated. Jeff laughed, believing it was a small amount.
Shortly after, Mrs. Lewis received a call confirming the $2 million donation. Everyone was astonished. Jeff still insisted it was a lie and challenged Charlie to prove his donation.
