Xion, suddenly delighted, was about to speak when Kairi added, “Xion, your father said you can keep the surname Elms, or choose any name except Xion Banks. You just can’t use the Banks family name.”

Xion’s happy expression instantly soured. Looking at Kairi, she asked, “Mom, Dad still doesn’t want others to know my identity, right?”

Kairi’s face fell. “Xion, you are your father’s illegitimate daughter, and not many people know. Besides your father and grandfather, only he and his lover know. If she found out, she’d leave him.”

Xion choked back a sob. “Mom, can’t I ever tell people Zayne is my father? Do I have to live my whole life as a fatherless girl?”

Tears welled in Kairi’s eyes. “Xion, your father’s affair with me was entirely my doing. He didn’t even know you existed for years. You can’t blame him for wanting to keep your identity secret!”

“Furthermore, your father paid a huge price to save you this time. Even if he can’t publicly claim you, he loves you deeply! You can’t blame him, understand?”

Xion sighed, nodded slightly, and said seriously, “Mom, I understand. Don’t worry, I won’t mention it again, or blame Dad.”

Kairi squeezed Xion’s hand. “In a few days, you’ll be escorted to Tokyo. Someone will contact you to arrange a transfer to the docks, where I’ll be waiting for you in China.”

“Mom, won’t you wait for me in Tokyo?” Xion asked hurriedly.

Kairi shook her head. “Your father said that after a successful escape, the Japanese will check everyone who recently entered the country. If they find out I came from China, via Osaka to Tokyo, it’ll give Homeland Security a clear lead. He told me to return to Osaka immediately after seeing you, to avoid leaving clues. He’ll arrange for someone else to meet you in Tokyo.”

Xion nodded. “Okay, Mom. I understand. Wait for me safely in China.”

The door opened. “It’s time,” someone said.

Kairi looked at Xion reluctantly. “Xion, take care. I have to go.”

Tears streamed down Xion’s face as she nodded gently. “Mom, take care. And thank Dad for me…”

Kairi patted her arm. “Nothing’s guaranteed, but you must promise me you’ll come back alive!”
