The Amazing Son in Law
Chapter 251
Charlie Wade chuckled helplessly at Jasmine’s words. “It seems you don’t intend to be bound by the Moore household’s policies.”
Jasmine replied, “I truly don’t want to be bound by the Moore household’s rules, but I have no other choice.”
“Why?” Charlie Wade asked seriously. “If he’s truly happy with you, you can use this opportunity to ask him for permission to choose your own husband.”
Jasmine smiled bitterly, shaking her head. “That’s impossible. Even if Grandpa likes me and feels sorry for me, he wouldn’t dare agree.”
“Why?” Charlie Wade asked, puzzled. “Isn’t your grandpa the head of the Moore household? He controls the entire family. What would he hesitate of?”
Jasmine responded seriously, “The Moore family has been built over many years. All members are bound by the family rules. As long as everyone obeys them, the family remains united and unbreakable. If anyone is allowed to break the rules, the Moore family will fall apart.”
She continued, “The Moore family has endured much hardship to become successful. We did it because we all prioritized the family’s interests, and no member ever broke the rules.”
Charlie Wade sighed. “Jasmine, I always thought you were strong and capable. I didn’t expect you to be at the mercy of others.”
“That’s right!” Jasmine sighed. “There’s no way out as long as I’m part of the Moore family.”
She raised her wine glass. “Mr. Wade, let’s not talk about these unhappy things. Let’s drink! I’ll toast you again!”
Charlie Wade raised his glass. “Alright. This wine is to celebrate freedom!”
Jasmine was startled. Freedom? She had none. Despite her depression, she forced a smile. “Yes! To freedom!”
After that drink, Jasmine began to feel the wine. She looked at Charlie Wade and sighed. “Do you know how many times I wished I’d been born into an ordinary family? My life wouldn’t be so hard. I wouldn’t face so many rules and restrictions, and I believe I’d be much happier. Although I have a high position and wealth, I don’t feel any real joy.”
Charlie Wade smiled slightly. “Do you also know that many ordinary people envy your wealth? You may think you’d be happier in an ordinary family, but that’s exactly what many people are trying to escape!”
Jasmine looked at him seriously. “Mr. Wade, you don’t seem to value money! You weren’t interested in the twenty million dollars they offered. You could have made a fortune selling those pills for ten million dollars each, but you gave them away for free. Why does money seem to mean nothing to you?”
Charlie Wade smiled indifferently. He didn’t care about money because he wasn’t short of it. Jasmine didn’t know about his past struggles. He had once borrowed money for medical expenses, believing in the karmic good deed. He was shocked to find that Lady Wilson, who professed Buddhism, was greedy and immoral. He'd have humbled himself for a million dollars then. But now, ten or twenty million meant nothing to him. He preferred their homage and respect. How could he explain this to Jasmine? She thought him a saint. Let her think so.
Jasmine continued drinking. “I can tolerate anything, but I don’t want to be controlled by the Moore family regarding my marriage. I don’t want to be a pawn.”
Charlie Wade asked, “Was your mother’s marriage arranged?”
“Yes,” Jasmine replied. “After marrying my father, my mother was never happy. She was depressed for years until she died young.”
Charlie Wade remembered Albert mentioning Jasmine’s mother giving her a ruby pendant over ten years ago. Estimating Jasmine’s age at twenty-five or twenty-six, her mother likely died when she was around ten.
Jasmine took another sip of wine. “Mr. Wade, I’m sorry for all the nonsense.”
Charlie Wade replied, “Jasmine, please don’t say that. I’m glad you confide in me. It shows you trust me.”
Jasmine wiped away tears. “Mr. Wade, thank you for everything today.”
Charlie Wade grinned. “You don’t need to be so formal with me! Friends shouldn’t be so polite.”
Jasmine said, “It’s getting late, Mr. Wade.”
Charlie Wade waved his hand. “You don’t need to see me off. You shouldn’t be driving; get a driver to take you home.”
Jasmine replied, “Don’t worry about me! The manager can drive me home. I’ll see you home first!”
Chapter 252
Jasmine returned to the Moore mansion after seeing Charlie Wade home. Lord Moore, instead of resting, was discussing the family situation with Jasmine’s father and uncle. Seeing Jasmine, he waved. “Jasmine! I’ve been waiting for you!”
“Grandpa?” Jasmine asked, “Why are you waiting?”
Lord Moore replied, “You invited Mr. Wade. Tell me how you met him.”
Jasmine explained meeting Charlie Wade by chance at Vintage Deluxe, mentioning his father-in-law breaking a vase and Charlie Wade’s skillful repair.
“Father-in-law?” Lord Moore frowned. “Mr. Wade is married?”
Jasmine nodded.
“What a pity!” Lord Moore sighed.
Sandwich quickly said, “Grandpa, don’t worry! I’ve heard Mr. Wade is the son-in-law of a small, insignificant family.”
“A small family?” Lord Moore was puzzled. “Which small family has such a son-in-law?”
Reuben smiled. “The Wilson family. Grandfather, you’ve probably never heard of them.”
“No, I haven’t.” Lord Moore frowned. “Since they’re a small family, there’s still hope.”
He looked at Jasmine. “Jasmine, continue…”
Jasmine continued her story, explaining how she got to know Charlie Wade. When she mentioned Charlie Wade’s role in Jack Yaleman’s death, everyone was shocked.
“Jack Yaleman…” Lord Moore murmured. “I’ve heard of him.”
Jasmine explained Yaleman’s arrogance and how Charlie Wade used lightning to kill him. Everyone was stunned.
Jasmine continued, detailing Charlie Wade’s help in thwarting another Feng Shui master’s attempt to swindle her. Lord Moore was impressed, admiring Charlie Wade for saving his life.
After a moment of silence, Lord Moore sighed. “The Wilson family is lucky to have such a son-in-law! Mr. Wade isn’t ordinary; he’s a god!”
Sandwich said, “Grandpa, isn’t that an overstatement?”
“Overstatement?” Lord Moore replied coldly. “Do you think lightning falls on command? He can do it, so he has supernatural powers! Such people should be called gods!”
Lord Moore looked at Jasmine seriously. “Jasmine! I have a task for you!”
Chapter 253
Jasmine quickly replied, “Grandfather, what do you want me to do?”
Lord Moore declared, “I want you to make Mr. Wade the son-in-law of the Moore family!”
Everyone, including Jasmine, was shocked.
Jasmine cautiously said, “Grandfather, Mr. Wade… is already married.”
“So what?” the old man said strongly. “I don’t care if he’s married or has multiple wives or girlfriends! We need to win him over! I want a son-in-law like him. With him as our son-in-law, the Moore family will rise tremendously!”
Jasmine hesitated but felt a strong conviction. She looked at Lord Moore. “Okay, Grandfather. I understand.”
Lord Moore laughed. “Great! If you make Mr. Wade our son-in-law, I’ll make you the next head of the Moore family, Jasmine!”
Everyone was surprised. He was appointing a woman as head of the family! He had made a promise, and he never broke his promises. The Moore family members had their own thoughts on this…
Chapter 254
Charlie Wade returned home at ten o’clock. His family was in the living room, looking solemn. Elaine Ma immediately began questioning him about his lateness. Claire Wilson frowned and said, “Mother!”
After Charlie Wade set out food, he asked, “What are you talking about? Why do you look so serious?”
Jacob Wilson asked, “Did you hear about the big news in Aurouss Hill today?”
“What news?”
“Turn of the Century Venture went bankrupt. All the other companies ended their partnerships, and creditors demanded their money.”
Charlie Wade acted surprised. “Oh? Really? That’s unfortunate.”
Jacob Wilson sighed. “Peter Murray was a dominant figure in Aurouss Hill’s real estate. I wonder who he angered.”
Claire Wilson replied coldly, “People like him deserve to go bankrupt.”
Elaine Ma sighed. “So, do you know how risky starting your own business is, Claire? If you lose money, you might take your own life.”
She looked at Claire. “I think you shouldn’t start your own business. Your grandmother promised to make you a manager at Wilson Group, with a fixed annual income.”
Chapter 255
Claire Wilson was puzzled by her mother’s encouragement to return to Wilson Group. She asked, “Mom, what euphoria did Granny feed you? Why are you always pushing me to return to Wilson Group?”
Elaine Ma was anxious. “If you work for Wilson Group, you’ll have a fixed income. Isn’t that better than starting your own business? What happens if you lose all your money? What will your father and I do then?”
Claire Wilson replied firmly, “Mom, stop forcing me! I’m never going back to Wilson Group. Even if I have to beg for food, I’ll never work for them again! I can beg, but I won’t lose my pride!”
Elaine Ma snapped, “Are you doing all this just to maintain your pride?”
She started crying. “Wilson Group will declare bankruptcy. If it closes, your father and I won’t get our pensions! We rely on that for retirement! Even if your grandmother doesn’t like your father, he still has a stake in Wilson Group! If you refuse to go back, we’ll lose our dividends! What will we do in the future?”
Claire Wilson retorted, “Mom! The Wilson family deserves to go bankrupt! Even if they go bankrupt, they deserve it!”
Elaine Ma lost her temper. “Claire Wilson! What are you talking about? We’ve been part of the Wilson family for a long time, and you’ve worked for Wilson Group for many years. Don’t you feel anything if Wilson Group goes bankrupt? Can you consider returning for my sake?”
Claire Wilson replied, “Mom, I’ve always done what you want. You asked for most of my salary, and I complied. You manage our finances, and I’ve given in. Father and I haven’t argued with you about managing our money. I’ve always given in, and I think you should show me some respect. I don’t want to return to Wilson Group. I want to start my own business. Can’t you support me for once?”
Elaine Ma knew she was wrong, but after hearing Claire’s words, she sat down and wept. “Why is my life so hard? I worked so hard to raise my child, and I thought I could rely on her marrying a good husband.”
Claire Wilson felt upset seeing her mother complain. “Can you stop taking your anger out on Charlie Wade all the time? Once the renovations are complete, we’ll move into the biggest suite at Thompson First because of Charlie Wade!”
Elaine Ma continued weeping. “What do I have to be grateful for? So what if we move into a suite? We have to live in fear because who knows when the White family will kick us out?”
Claire Wilson sighed. “Mother, I can’t tolerate this anymore if you’re going to keep crying and complaining. Stop it or I’ll move out of this house with Charlie Wade.”
“You…” Elaine Ma stood up, distressed. “Do you really want to live apart from us?”
Claire Wilson replied, “Yes. Charlie Wade and I have been married for years. It’s time for us to move out.”
“No!” Elaine Ma blurted out. “Not!”
Claire Wilson looked at her mother seriously. “Mom, if you keep forcing me to return to Wilson Group, I’ll move out with Charlie Wade immediately. If you stop talking about Wilson Group, I won’t move out. You can decide.”
Elaine Ma looked at Claire and saw she wasn’t kidding. She suddenly realized she had pushed Claire too far. If she continued, Claire would move out. Then, she’d have no choice but to fend for herself.
