Chapter 291
Cain was dead set on trying, and Maddox had already exposed Sienna. She had no choice but to sit there, watching with a cold expression. He took off the bracelet and set it on the table. He barely had time to process it whenโ
โWatch out!โ someone shouted.
Cainโs head snapped up just in time to see a sharp piece of wood breaking loose from the grape trellis above. It was falling fast, right toward him. No way to dodge. โArri1 seriously about to get taken out by a damn stick?โ
For a split second, he was frozen. Sitting down like this, thereโฆ
Before panic could fully set in, Raylan flicked the lid of his cup with pinpoint accuracy. The small object struck the falling wood midair, knocking it off course. Instead of impaling Cainโs skull, it landed harmlessly at his feet.
Cainโs face went pale. Thatโฆ that was way too fast.
Still shaken, he turned to Raylan. โMaster Flynn, thanks.โ Without his quick reflexes, Cain would probably be sitting there with a cracked skull.
Raylan just smiled, saying nothing.
Trying to shake off the nerves, Cain reached for his cup and took a sip, only to immediately choke on it. He coughed so violently that his face turned red, his breath hitching like he was on the verge of passing out. Sienna jumped up and patted his back, but it took nearly two minutes before he finally stopped gasping for air. His hands were shaking.
โThat was way too fast,โ he muttered.
Phoebe crossed her arms. โOf course it is. You gave up a third of your luck and have been wearing a bracelet that amplifies bad luck. What did you think was gonna happen?โ She nodded toward Jamar. โGo on, try borrowing luck from your brother.โ
Cain immediately turned to Jamar. โGive me half of your luck.โ
Jamar gawked at him. โSienna took a third from you, and now youโre asking me for half? Have you lost your mind?โ
Cain waved him off. โA third wonโt cut it; I need at least half to balance things out.โ
Jamar clenched his fists. He was so close to punching Cain in the face. So, this idiot wants to make himself lucky by screwing me over instead?
Cain looked at Phoebe. โShould I go along with this?โ
Phoebe smirked. โIf you trust me, then yeah. Youโre wearing the emerald, right?โ That stone was like a shield; nobody could mess with it, even if they tried.
Jamar nodded. โYeah, I gotโฆโ He shot Phoebe a confident look. โOf course, I trust you.โ
Phoebe nodded. โAlright, go ahead and test it out with him.โ
Jamar turned to Cain. โFine. You want half my luck? Take it.โ He flung his arms dramatically, then took a few steps around. โNothing happened. He exhaled in relief. Still good. No bad luck on my end.โ
Cain frowned. He decided to test it for himself. He barely took three steps before his ankle twisted out of nowhere. Before he could react, he went stumbling sideways, right toward the flower bed. The worst part, the flower bed was edged with jagged stones, and one particularly nasty, sharp rock was directly in his path. If he landed on his face, he would be wrecked. If he hit his head, he would be bleeding all over the place.
His stomach dropped. He couldnโt stop himself. Just when he thought he was doomed, something shot out from the table. A scarf wrapped around his waist and yanked him sideways at the last second. Instead of slamming into the rocks, he flopped onto a patch of grass.
The scarf had come from Phoebe. Her outfit today had those long, draping fabrics, and she had reacted just in time. She hadnโt saved him out of kindness; she was the one who told him to test it out, after all. And they were live-streaming. Letting him crack his skull open wouldnโt look great on camera. Besides, Cain was just unlucky. If it wasnโt this, something else would get him soon enough.
Cain sat up, looking like he had just seen a ghost. โIs there any point in wearing the bracelet now?โ he asked, catching his breath.
Phoebe shrugged. โYeah, it will hold back the bad luck for a while. But once it wears off, youโre gonna deal with the same crap for the next three or four months.โ
Then, everyone turned to Cain with looks of pure sympathy. That was brutal. At the same time, they were all a little freaked out. So, luck could actually be transferred. That was insane.
โTheebs, what are the rules when it comes to luck!โ They needed to know; no one wanted to end up like Cain.
Phoebe sighed. โThere are tons of shady ways people can steal or mess with luck. Some even mess with fate. But cases like Cain and Sienna isโฆ is super rare. People never deal with that.โ
โThe real danger? Random packets of money lying around. Some have birth dates or number talismans inside.โ
โIf you pick one up and spend the money, congrats, you just handed over your luck or even a piece of your lifespan.โ
โThey call it life money or transfer money. So, if you see cash wrapped in paper on the ground? Walk away.โ She let that sink in, then added, โThe other big risk is giving luck away voluntarily.โ
โSometimes, people ask as a joke, โYour life is too good, wanna share?โ or โHey, give me some of your good luck!โ Never agree!โ
โIf they have your birth info, hair, or blood, they can actually take it. And once itโs gone, you feel it.โ
She gestured toward Cain and Jamar. โNow, in their case, nothing shady happened. Even though they agreed, no real luck was transferred. But my advice! If anyone ever asks, just say no.โ
โDonโt test it. Donโt brush it off. Luck seems small, but losing it hurts.โ Then she looked straight at Cain. โHeโs proof. Youโve all seen how unlucky he is. This is what happens when you donโt take it seriously.โ
Cain groaned. โSeriously! Heโs already having the worst day, and now heโs a walking PSA! Embarrassing!โ
Without a word, he snatched up the bracelet and put it back on. First, he would stop the bad luck; he was going to deal with everything else later.
Once the bracelet was on, he took a few steps. Nothing happened.
The room fell silent. Even the live-stream chat froze for a second. Yeah. Cain was definitely out of luck.
Cain leaned back in his chair, watching Sienna closely. โYou saw what just happened. Got anything to say?โ
Sienna bit her lip, looking hurt. โCain, I really didnโt know this would happen. My friend never told me anything like that. After the show, Iโll take you to him. You can ask him yourself.โ
She was already thinking ahead; once they were out, she would have to find someone else to take the blame. As long as she stuck to her story, there was no proof against her. And knowing Cain, he would probably believe her again. All she had to do was play her cards right and treat him better.
