Chapter 83

Christopher snapped back to reality. He flipped the tablet over, grabbed the documents, and walked out. As he walked, his mind replayed various videos and photos of Melody. He couldn’t help but think, “Melody really is outstanding. Why have I never noticed before?”

He could guess why. In high school, Melody had always excelled, and she stood out even more in college. Though they attended the same school, their majors differed, and at that time, he had always been with Cynthia. Looking back, he felt like he had missed out on four years with Melody. She had been so close to him back then. He even entertained a ridiculous thought: If he hadn’t been with Cynthia, would he have fallen for Melody during their college years?

His fingers tightened involuntarily as the meeting began, forcing him to stop fidgeting. The meeting concluded over two hours later, and it was lunchtime. Sheldon had ordered food. He hadn’t eaten breakfast or dinner, and though dizzy with hunger, he found himself with no appetite. Everything reminded him of Melody, even the oatmeal before him. The porridge was slimy, over-seasoned; Melody’s cooking was always light, sweet, and fragrant.

Christopher gripped the spoon tightly, pursing his lips in self-disgust. How pathetic, he thought; he couldn’t even eat unless it was Melody’s cooking. If she knew, she would probably feel arrogant and self-satisfied. Her temper had worsened lately, and he couldn’t let her become too full of herself. Christopher’s expression darkened as he snorted coldly. He quickly finished the oatmeal in frustration and anger.

Despite his sleepless night, his energy remained unaffected. He skipped his lunch break and returned to reviewing Melody’s files. He watched each video multiple times, gathered details about her elementary school and homeroom teacher, and practically memorized her entire background. By 2:00 PM, it was time to return to work, but he hadn’t taken his eyes off the tablet.

“Mr. Fuller, these are the documents you need to sign for approval this afternoon.” Sheldon entered with the papers and noticed Christopher rubbing his temple, looking exhausted. “Didn’t you take a nap?” he asked.

Christopher didn’t answer. Instead, he asked, “Any updates?” Sheldon paused before replying with a slight hum. “I contacted the carrier. Apparently, Mrs. Fuller has removed her SIM card, which is why the call isn’t going through. Maybe she’s just feeling down and went out to clear her mind. She’ll probably come back after a few days,” he added.

Christopher’s face remained stern as he coldly retorted, “Why couldn’t she even let me know beforehand? She just left without a word. Does she think nothing of me?” Sheldon couldn’t help but retort, “When you brought someone else home, did you consider Mrs. Fuller’s feelings?”

Christopher froze, then shot a glare at Sheldon. Sheldon quickly took a couple of steps back. “To be fair, Mr. Fuller, you were in the wrong here. What you did can be considered cheating,” Sheldon said, stating the uncomfortable truth. He knew he would be transferred if he couldn’t find Melody, so he might as well speak his mind.

“I didn’t!” Christopher snapped. “I’ve never had a physical relationship with Cynthia!”

Sheldon was taken aback, his ears ringing from the outburst. He looked at Christopher in surprise.
