Chapter 185: Brother-in-Law

"All security guards, assemble in Zone A! Someone broke into the district and attacked me!" Kevin yelled into his walkie-talkie. He was merely stalling, hoping Jared would release him. He hadn't even bothered to verify Jared's claim of property ownershipโ€”it was obviously false.

"You jerk! My men will be here soon. Just wait to be beaten!" Kevin threatened, glaring viciously at Jared.

Mark, who had just breathed a sigh of relief, heard his brother-in-law's panicked report on the walkie-talkie: someone had broken in and assaulted him. Anxiety immediately gripped Mark. He wasn't worried about Kevin; he feared his incompetent brother-in-law would cause serious trouble. He'd only agreed to let Kevin head security after much begging. Kevin had been on the job for only two days, but instead of working, he'd spent his time socializing with the sales department.

When Mark and the other guards arrived at Zone A, they found Jared standing beside his car, cold sweat beading on his forehead. My fear has come true! Mark thought. My brother-in-law has really caused a huge problem.

Mark hurried over. Seeing his brother-in-law and backup arrive, Kevin rushed forward, whining, "Mark, this man broke in and attacked me! You must teach him a lesson!"

Zayne smirked coldly as he saw Mark approach with the guards. "Jared, let's see where you run now. Boasting isn't illegal, but you'll pay for exaggerating. You claimed to own property here, to live in that mansion on the hill? Why not claim to be God?"

Lydia chuckled, hiding her amusement behind her hand. "I've lived over twenty years, and I've never seen such a shameless boaster."

Zayne and Lydia watched expectantly, anticipating a confrontation. Maria, however, sighed. If Jared was hurt, she would plead on his behalf; she couldn't stand idly by and watch him injured.

But just as Zayne and Lydia waited for Mark to act, Mark slapped his brother-in-law, the blow nearly knocking Kevin to the ground.

Stunned, Kevin stared at Mark in disbelief. "Why did you hit me? Are you crazy?" he yelled.

"Yes, I'm crazy. I shouldn't have made you head of security. You're fired! Get out and never come back!" Mark ordered, snatching the baton from Kevin's grasp.

"Youโ€ฆ" Kevin glared furiously. "How dare you? I'll tell my sister!" He stormed off.

Zayne and the others were dumbfounded. Even the sales associates were confused. Only the guards understood Mark's actions: he'd saved his own brother-in-law. If Kevin had angered Jared further, he would have been killed.

After Kevin left, Mark nervously watched Jared, fearing he'd retaliate. Jared remained silent, however, and Mark breathed a sigh of relief.
