Chapter 255: Finding a Job
Jared's brows furrowed, his expression darkening at Benedict's words. Gary noticed his son's grim look and quickly interjected, "Benedict, we're here for a family meal. Why bring up Jared's friend? She wouldn't be interested in Javier anyway!"
Although Benedict looked down on Gary and his family, Gary was his older brother. Therefore, he dared not retort.
"What do you mean, Gary? What's wrong with Javier? He's better than Jared. At least Javier hasn't been to prison," Stella piped up, displeased by Gary's remark.
Benedict lacked the courage to say it, but I fear nothing!
"You" Gary flushed angrily, but remained silent; Jared's prison record was undeniable.
A faint sneer played on Benedict's lips at his brother's fury. Finally, he said, "All right, that's enough. Let's order. I have other matters to attend to and can't stay long."
Hannah offered Benedict the menu. "Why don't you choose?"
Without looking, Benedict pointed to a page. "Let's order everything on this page. I've heard the food is delicious."
His response stunned Hannah. Everything? How much would that cost? And there were only a few of them.
Gianna giggled at Hannah's reaction. "Can't afford it? Tell me. I'll pay."
Hannah blushed but remained silent. She couldn't afford it!
"Those few dishes won't cost much," Jared said, taking the menu and gesturing for Hannah to sit. He then ordered everything on the page.
Benedict and his family sneered.
Javier gave Jared a contemptuous glance. "Let's be clear. You refused my sister's offer to pay, so don't expect our help later."
"Rest assured, I won't ask for money. This meal is my treat," Jared replied calmly, unfazed by their snide remarks.
An awkward silence followed. Everyone waited for the food.
Finally, Hannah broke the silence. "Benedict, you mentioned finding Jared a government job. Do you think—" [The website plug has been removed.]
Benedict cut her off haughtily. "Finding him a job is easy. I can ask for a favor. Slaving away at a random company isn't a long-term solution. I can find him a stable job for life. However, I want our family's old residence. I plan to build a new house there after retirement. Even if you own the land, you can't afford to build."
Hannah glanced at Gary, who remained silent. She nodded. "If you find Jared a stable job, you can have the old residence."
A stable government job is much better than working at a random company. People will respect us. If Gary hadn't lost his job, we wouldn't need Benedict's help.
Benedict grinned, pleased.
"Mom, I don't want a government job! And we deserve our share of the old residence!" Jared protested. He knew Benedict's motive wasn't just a new house; he'd seen a report about upcoming development in that area.
"That place is old and rundown. Hush, let your uncle find you a job. Then you can have a peaceful life," Hannah warned, silencing him.
