Leyton sighed. “You may not know this, but Jared, for reasons I don’t understand, has won the favor of men like Walter, Tommy, and William. They treat him with immense respect. My family can’t compare.”

Tyrion burst into laughter, contempt in his eyes. “Walter, Tommy, and William? How terrifyingly powerful!”

Embarrassed, Leyton continued, “They may be nothing to you, Mr. Whitaker, but our family is far inferior to yours.”

Tyrion narrowed his eyes. “I’m offering you a chance, Leyton. Will you take it?”

Stunned, Leyton asked, “What chance?”

“Revenge on Jared. Those you mentioned won’t dare help him,” Tyrion explained with a half-smile.

“Really?” Leyton’s eyes lit up, then dimmed. “Why help me, Mr. Whitaker? It’s hardly altruistic.”

Tyrion guffawed. “Altruistic? I never act selflessly. By helping you destroy Jared, I help myself. Have you forgotten my relationship with Josephine?”

After a stunned silence, Leyton exclaimed excitedly, “You like Josephine, but she and Jared… they’re dating!”

“Precisely. How can I let an ex-convict steal my woman? Besides, Jared broke Frederick’s wrist; Frederick hates him. With Frederick and me supporting you, who will dare help him?” Tyrion asked, a malicious glint in his eyes.

“Frederick?” Leyton’s eyes widened. “Mr. Lowe’s son?”

“Correct. He also likes Josephine. They’ve clashed over her. But his status prevents him from acting openly. And I’m from another city—it’s inappropriate for me to interfere. You’re the perfect candidate,” Tyrion explained frankly.

Overwhelmed with excitement, Leyton erupted in laughter. “Jared must have a death wish! He hit the mayor’s son? He’s finished. If I’d known, I wouldn’t have given him those two companies!”

Tyrion grinned. “If you eliminate Jared, the companies are yours.”

Tyrion gave him a contemptuous look. “What are you afraid of? Josephine is merely bait! You’ll give her to me. William can’t touch me!”

“You’re right,” Leyton nodded. “With your support, I fear nothing.”

Tyrion patted his shoulder. “Go. I have faith. Once this is done, our families will unite, and yours will be Horington’s richest!”
