Chapter 1011
The plain white paper contained only two sentences: “Skye, you must divorce Joe within two weeks, or both of your lives will be at risk. Fate is unchangeable. Both of you aren’t meant to be.”
Skylar’s heart constricted at the letter. Alexander sighed heavily, his concern evident. “You and Joe are both good kids. You’ve been married for a while, and I know your bond is deep. It’s incredibly unfair to ask you to divorce like this. But if Viola says your lives will be in danger if you stay together, then…” He paused, his voice trailing off. “Sigh! I can’t even bring myself to tell Gloria. We spoke yesterday, and she hasn’t been feeling well. If she knew about this, she’d be heartbroken. I’m not sure how she’ll take it.”
Truly, fate could be cruel. At his age, Alexander believed he had seen and understood everything. His emotions shouldn't fluctuate so wildly. Yet, a deep sorrow overwhelmed him. Joe and Skylar had been through so much. The constant setbacks left Skylar reeling. She examined the letter, searching for evidence of forgery. However, the handwriting was undeniably Viola’s. Viola was always correct; she never erred. She wouldn’t write such a letter unless it was critically important. The letter instructed them to avoid negativity and even suggested divorce.
“You should take these letters with you. Discuss them with Joe and make a decision. You still have two weeks. Also, think about how you will tell Gloria gently. Take some time off. You don’t need to come to work for the next few days,” Alexander said with genuine concern.
Skylar nodded, speechless.
A few minutes later, Caleb entered, asking, “Grandpa, what did you say to Skylar? Her face was pale, and she seemed deeply troubled. You didn’t regret giving her this break, did you?”
Alexander glared. “What nonsense? Get back to work. Do you think Skylar is like you? I wouldn’t mind giving her another six months off. You, however, annoy me even with one day off. If Skylar comes to work in the next few days, you better behave yourself and avoid upsetting her.”
Caleb was relieved. “As long as you’re not making things hard for Skylar, that’s fine.”
“What’s going on in your mind? Get out,” Alexander snapped, waving him away. He was exasperated with Caleb’s behavior.
After leaving Alexander’s office, Skylar remained agitated. Instead of going home, she found a café, seeking solace in coffee and contemplation.
Before she realized it, noon had passed. She scrutinized the letters again, searching for any sign of imitation. After two hours, she found nothing. Just then, Joe called.
