Chapter 117
Christopher was determined to destroy Paul. Skylar, thinking she'd seen it all, was proven wrong. Christopher had sunk even lower.
Paul, exasperated, exclaimed, "You shamelessly flaunt other women, including that fake Williams heiress, and now you're accusing me and Ms. Sullivan? Since you're at the hospital, why not see a specialist?"
"Christopher, I always knew you were shameless," Skylar said, "but I never expected you to stoop this low." She walked over and slapped him. She'd wanted to do that for a long time. His actions and lies had pushed her to the breaking point. How could she have wasted seven years of her life on him?
Joe regarded Christopher with an icy stare, like a king surveying an ant. He remained silent, yet his commanding presence filled the room.
Christopher, stunned by the slap, sputtered, "Did you just slap me for that guy? Skylar, you've changed!"
Amelia shrieked, "Are you insane? Did you just hit my son? Did you think Christopher genuinely liked you? You were the one clinging to him! That's why he had no choice but to be with you!"
"Do you think you're so noble? Even your own parents don't want you. You're just a country girl. How dare you slap Christopher? You deserve nothing but misery!"
Amelia's outburst was so furious she seemed on the verge of collapsing. Her face contorted with rage. If she had the strength, she would have lunged at Skylar and attacked her.
"Tell your son to stay away from me," Skylar said. "If you're both so innocent and above reproach, why don't you return every cent you took from me? I used to think I was helping the needy, doing a good deed. Even a dog knows gratitude. Now I'm disgusted by both of you."
Skylar took a deep breath, her face paling. She felt utterly exposed, and the fact that Joe witnessed this vulnerability bothered her.
Amelia had been ill, and Skylar had cared for her more than Christopher had. Yet, all she received was insults and ridicule instead of gratitude. Humanity, she thought, could be so ugly.
A crowd had gatheredโit was a hospital, after all, and a large fight attracted attention.
Some patients recognized Amelia and whispered amongst themselves, "I can't stand her either. As soon as that young lady arrives, she acts helpless and makes her do everything. Then, as soon as she leaves, Amelia badmouths her, calling her a fool for liking her son and saying she needs to please Amelia or else she'll have her son break up with her!" "That young lady is so sweet. If she weren't so devoted to her son, I'd take her as my own daughter-in-law." "It's unbearable. Just unbearable."
Their whispers, though quiet, were easily overheard.
Joe looked at Skylar, then leaned in to whisper to Paul, "Ms. Sullivan, would you like me to find you a lawyer? I can ensure they return every penny."
Paul felt sickened by Amelia and Christopher's audacity. What a shameless family!
Amelia, startled by the mention of lawyers and repayment, panicked. "You can't treat people like this! You gave us that money willingly! Christopher, let's go. Even if she regrets and begs you, don't forgive her!"
