Chapter 125
Jeffrey's expression darkened.
Sadie was shocked. "Why is the company facing so many problems all of a sudden?" she asked.
Jeffrey shot her a harsh look and scoffed. "It's all thanks to your daughter!"
"My daughter? Maisy has always been sensible. She couldn't have caused this," Sadie defended Maisy, forgetting about her other daughter.
"Mom, it's not Maisy. She wouldn't betray her family. It's Skylar. She became Joe's assistant Paul's sugar baby. She probably told him things, and now he's badmouthing our family to Joe," Peter explained. "As a result, the Martin Group refused to work with us and canceled their order. Many other companies are following suit, afraid of crossing the Martin Group." He gritted his teeth in anger.
This was the worst week of his twenty-year career. He blamed Skylar, the anger almost consuming him.
Sadie was stunned. "Skylar? She was well-behaved when she lived with us. It's impossible!"
"Now's not the time for this. Call her and ask her to come home," Jeffrey said.
"I've called her many times. She wouldn't answer. I even tried Janine, but she hung up after a few words. She won't answer now," Sadie replied, feeling a strange emptiness. The house had been quiet lately. Maisy was always out, and Sadie occasionally missed Skylar's presence—her cooking, her care when someone was unwell. She wondered if she had taken Skylar for granted.
Peter, still scowling, turned to Maisy. "Maisy, call Janine. Tell her Mom is sick, bedridden, and wants to see Skylar. Skylar isn't answering, so we need your help. She'll listen to you, as her biological daughter."
"Okay, I'll try," Maisy replied, startled. Half-asleep and worried about the Williamses' situation, she felt sluggish.
Sadie frowned at Maisy's slowness.
Janine was surprised by Maisy's call. The news sent a chill down her spine. Maisy only contacted her in emergencies. "Ms. Yancey, I'm begging you. Mom is really sick and wants to see Skylar. No matter what happened, their bond is unbreakable," Maisy pleaded, but Janine remained silent.
Maisy hated Janine, considering her a country bumpkin undeserving of being her mother. Now that she needed Janine's help, she was being difficult.
Janine sighed. "Okay."
Skylar had just arrived at Gardner Group when Janine called. "Skye, you can decide for yourself," Janine said, unwilling to force Skylar. After all, Sadie was her biological mother, and if she were seriously ill, Skylar would want to see her.
After hanging up, Skylar hesitated. Sadie seriously ill? She didn't remember this happening in her past life. Could her rebirth have altered others' fates?
