Chapter 236
After receiving Joe's reply, John walked downstairs. Suzy's greeting, "Mr. Gardner," instantly drew the attention of the three Williams family members. Facing John, they seemed slightly less imposing, especially Peter, who was only a couple of years older. Although they were practically peers, he felt intimidated.
"Mr. Gardner, we're here to talk about you and Skye," Jeffrey began.
John, just settling into a seat, was surprised. "Skye and me?" he asked. He'd only met Skye once. What could this be about?
"Yes, we know Skye is your secret lover," Peter quickly interjected. "She hid it from us, fearing blame."
Jeffrey nodded. "Our family is very strict. We don't tolerate anyone undermining others' relationships. Skye's been immature, but it takes two to tango. Mr. Gardner, you pursued her, didn't you?"
Sadie added, "Skye always listens to us; she's sensible. She must feel guilty now."
John understood. His handsome face grew solemn. No wonder Joe had said the Williams family weren't related to Skye and shouldn't be treated politely. They'd completely misunderstood his relationship with her. But what were their true intentions?
"State your purpose," John demanded coldly.
The three exchanged nervous glances, sensing his indifference. They still tried, however.
"We accept your relationship with Skye," Jeffrey said, "but hope you'll help our family through this difficult time."
"Helping us helps you," Peter added.
John understood. Standing, he said coldly, "You're mistaken. Skye and I have nothing to do with each other."
Peter produced his phone, showing John a photo Samuel had taken. "We have proof of your relationship."
John saw a picture of him and Skye having lunch yesterday. He hadn't expected to be photographed, much less for the Williams family to use it to leverage Skye. No wonder Skye hadn't acknowledged them; they were ambitious, heartless wolves.
"A lunch photo proves a relationship? If you continue this, I'll involve my lawyer. Can you handle the consequences of damaging my reputation?" John warned impassively.
Jeffrey and Peter were stunned. They hadn't expected such a resolute response; they'd anticipated resistance, but not outright denial and a threat of legal action. The tables had turned.
Sadie, however, pressed on anxiously. "You can't lie! If you hadn't supported Skye, she wouldn't have joined Mr. Gardner Senior's team! You might fool others, but not us!"
John's anger flared at Sadie's questioning of Skye's abilities and his father's hiring practices. "You dare slander my father? Do you even know who the Gardners are in Jipsburg?"
He then messaged Joe: "The Williams family is unbelievable. They think I'm with Skye and that she joined Dad's team because of me. They want her to stay with me to save their company. How incredibly blind can they be?"
