Chapter 631
Skylar didn't seem like an arrogant or disrespectful young woman. Molly kindly invited her, "Have a seat."
Skylar nodded. "Alright."
"Take a look at the menu. What would you like to drink?" Molly asked.
"Thanks, but I'd rather just have some water," Skylar replied, glancing at the glass beside her. Coffee would interfere with her sleep, and she anticipated a brief discussion.
She didn't immediately begin questioning Molly, instead taking a sip of water and waiting. Molly wasn't surprised by Skylar's composure; working on Alexander's team, handling cases independently, she clearly possessed capability and dependability. However, Joe's father, Edwin Martin, felt differently.
"You and Joe are married, correct?" Molly asked gently.
Skylar answered, "Yes."
Molly smiled slightly. "Joe's father, Edwin, and I only learned of this two days ago. We know Gloria introduced you. Joe adores her; he wouldn't refuse her requests."
She paused. Skylar listened silently, her expression unchanged. Suddenly, Molly suspected that even Joe's seemingly heartless nature had been captivated by Skylar; otherwise, he wouldn't have willingly married her. This complicated matters considerably.
"However, Edwin had selected a bride for him. From similarly wealthy families, their marriage would solidify a beneficial alliance. You made a strong impression on me; you deserve happiness. But you and Joe are ill-suited, from different social circles. The public doesn't know you yet; that will change, and you won't be able to handle the fallout."
Molly watched Skylar's expression. Despite her youth, Skylar skillfully concealed her emotions, appearing calm and obedient. This, Molly realized, was deceptive. Skylar seemed impervious to outside opinions, even Molly's disapproval.
"I'm only Joe's stepmother," Molly continued. "I'm meeting you in Edwin's stead. I didn't want to hurt you, but it seems the damage is done."
Skylar nodded. "What do you want me to do?"
Molly was taken aback. Skylar's directness was unexpected. She'd prepared for a difficult encounter. How many women would relinquish Joe after marriage? Molly hadn't even mentioned the substantial compensation she'd offer.
"We want you to divorce Joe before the marriage becomes public. This minimizes damage to Joe and the Martin family. We will compensate you; any demands can be stated now; we won't exploit you."
Skylar's reasonableness simplified things considerably. Skylar nodded slightly. "Have you asked Joe about this?"
Molly's eyes sharpened. "Joe respects Gloria. If she doesn't agree to the divorce, he likely won't. But that doesn't mean his reluctance stems from love. Do you understand?"
"I do," Skylar replied, nodding again.
Molly had been painfully clear. Skylar would have been foolish to misunderstand. This felt surreal to Skylar, like a movie scene—an absurd feeling for one of the main characters.
