Chapter 68

Joe watched the video. In the footage, Skylar and the man appeared incredibly at ease with each other, even more so than the photos suggested.

Frowning, Joe replied, "Seems like you have a lot of free time."

Reading Joe's reply, Paul's heart sank. He wanted to reply that he wasn't free, but realized Joe probably disliked Skylar; otherwise, he wouldn't be so indifferent. He felt like he was about to be reprimanded. He vowed never to question Joe again.

But was Skylar unconcerned about Joe's feelings for her?

Joe forcefully loosened his tie, causing a shirt button to fall. He picked up the finely crafted button; it shimmered in his palm under the light. Fiddling with it, he checked his watch: 8:10 PM. His already emotionless eyes grew colder.

After leaving the restaurant, Skylar was about to part ways with Steven. As she said goodbye, he got into her car. "I'll drop you off, then head back to my dorm."

"It's almost 8:00 PM. Let me drop you off first," Skylar said, starting her car.

Steven's expression darkened. He looked at Skylar seriously. "I've spent the most time with you since we were kids. I can tell when something's bothering you, Skye. Did something happen?" He could tell something was on her mind; these days, she seemed different. The sadness and loneliness she emanated suffocated him, like when he discovered his little sister was bullied.

Skylar knew Steven was worried. Gripping the steering wheel, she wanted to tell him about her wedding, but remembered her covert marriage agreement with Joe. After hesitating, she said, "I got married."

"Married?" Steven was shocked. Knowing she'd recently broken up with Christopher, he wondered how she'd married so quickly and what she'd been through. He knew she wasn't usually so impulsive.

"With whom? How old is he? What does he do? How did you two meet?" He bombarded Skylar with questions, worried she'd been hurt by Christopher and deceived by someone untrustworthy.

Skylar answered earnestly, "It's someone Grandma Gloria introduced. We got together after careful consideration, but I can't bring him to meet you. He has a stable job and is five years older than me. Although it was a quick wedding, he treats me quite well."

"So you married him before falling for him? Skye, have you been reading too many novels? Are you so confident you'll fall for him?" Steven's face turned dark. He wanted to meet this man and see what spell he'd cast on Skylar.

"I haven't thought about that. Novels are just novels, and I'm not the female lead. We're just… living together, nothing more. Don't worry, Steven. I've experienced enough. I know what I'm doing." Skylar started the car.
