"Did I hear wrong?" she wondered. A fever could impair hearing; perhaps she'd been mistaken. But if something had happened to Skylar…

Jenny's heart pounded. "If something happened to Skylar… she might not be saved if it's serious," she whispered, biting her lip. She had to know.

She called Howard repeatedly, but he didn't answer. Her fears solidified: something had happened to Skylar.

Half an hour later, the warehouse's locked door was sawed open. Several men rushed inside, their expressions shifting upon seeing the cameras and lights.

Skylar, her eyes unfocused, turned as they entered. Though her vision blurred, she recognized one. "Joe, you finally came," she sighed weakly.

Joe recoiled at the blood streaming down Skylar's face. The men around her were also injured, all clad only in underwear, their wounds horrifying. Aiken stared, incredulous. Blood caked Skylar's head and face; her clothes were disheveled. She fainted immediately after speaking.

She wasn't holding a knife, only a rusted piece of metal. Its fall revealed a bloody wound across her palm—the evidence of her desperate fight. She'd harmed them, but also herself.

"All of you have a death wish!" Joe roared at the stunned men, their fury ignited by her unexpected strength and the realization that Joe had found them.

Aiken regarded Skylar with a conflicted expression. For a seemingly weak woman, her resistance was astonishing. Joe removed his coat, covering Skylar. Gathering her in his arms, he instructed Aiken, "Teach them a lesson. Find out who paid them off." Aiken nodded, meeting Joe's gaze.
