Chapter 748
โYeah, I didnโt see anything that appealed to me,โ Skylar answered. She couldnโt afford any of the cars, and driving one away would attract too much attention. Besides, she wanted to avoid a repeat of what happened with Vera.
Joe glanced at her before looking ahead. They drove in silence.
They arrived at the hospital shortly. It was a top-tier facility, yet overcrowded. Hospital rooms were full, forcing many patients to sleep in the corridors, some accompanied by family, creating a chaotic scene. Joeโs presence tended to cause a commotion, so Skylar said, โThere are too many people here. Wait for me in the parking lot.โ
Joe readily agreed, taking the elevator down while Skylar went to Sadieโs room. Sadie lay alone.
As Skylar entered, the patients and their families stared. โAre you her family?โ one asked. โOther than the two people this morning, no oneโs cared for her. Why didnโt you get a caregiver?โ another chimed in.
โStop talking,โ Skylar retorted. โLetโs not discuss othersโ family affairs.โ
The murmuring continued. Skylar ignored them, walking to Sadieโs bed. Sadie was unconscious and disoriented. Skylar hadnโt seen her in a while; since her paralysis, Sadie had deteriorated horribly. The elegant wife of a wealthy man had become unkempt and emaciated.
Even with her paralysis, Sadie wouldn't have become so frail if her family had cared for her. Anyone could see their neglect; it was why she was near death. The other patients' complaints were readily understandable. Skylar knew their thoughts, but the details of her relationship with Sadie were not for strangers.
At that moment, a doctor entered for his rounds. He checked on other patients before coming to Sadieโs bed. He was surprised to see Skylar and his expression turned grim. โSheโs in critical condition. Youโre her family, right? How have you been taking care of her?โ
Skylar replied calmly, โIโm not legally related to her.โ
The doctor was stunned, slightly embarrassed.
โHow long does she have?โ Skylar asked.
He replied sadly, โEven considering the accident and amputation, she wouldnโt be here if her family had provided adequate care. She wonโt last more than a few days. Tell her family to prepare themselves.โ
Skylar nodded. With no further questions, the doctor left.
Skylar stared at Sadie, reflecting on her past life. The irony struck herโwhen she'd had the chance to start over, it was Sadie, not Skylar, who lay half-dead in a hospital bed. The thought evoked a complex mix of emotions.
Having seen Sadie, Skylar turned to leave.
