Chapter 748

“Yeah, I didn’t see anything that appealed to me,” Skylar answered. She couldn’t afford any of the cars, and driving one away would attract too much attention. Besides, she wanted to avoid a repeat of what happened with Vera.

Joe glanced at her before looking ahead. They drove in silence.

They arrived at the hospital shortly. It was a top-tier facility, yet overcrowded. Hospital rooms were full, forcing many patients to sleep in the corridors, some accompanied by family, creating a chaotic scene. Joe’s presence tended to cause a commotion, so Skylar said, “There are too many people here. Wait for me in the parking lot.”

Joe readily agreed, taking the elevator down while Skylar went to Sadie’s room. Sadie lay alone.

As Skylar entered, the patients and their families stared. “Are you her family?” one asked. “Other than the two people this morning, no one’s cared for her. Why didn’t you get a caregiver?” another chimed in.

“Stop talking,” Skylar retorted. “Let’s not discuss others’ family affairs.”

The murmuring continued. Skylar ignored them, walking to Sadie’s bed. Sadie was unconscious and disoriented. Skylar hadn’t seen her in a while; since her paralysis, Sadie had deteriorated horribly. The elegant wife of a wealthy man had become unkempt and emaciated.

Even with her paralysis, Sadie wouldn't have become so frail if her family had cared for her. Anyone could see their neglect; it was why she was near death. The other patients' complaints were readily understandable. Skylar knew their thoughts, but the details of her relationship with Sadie were not for strangers.

At that moment, a doctor entered for his rounds. He checked on other patients before coming to Sadie’s bed. He was surprised to see Skylar and his expression turned grim. “She’s in critical condition. You’re her family, right? How have you been taking care of her?”

Skylar replied calmly, “I’m not legally related to her.”

The doctor was stunned, slightly embarrassed.

“How long does she have?” Skylar asked.

He replied sadly, “Even considering the accident and amputation, she wouldn’t be here if her family had provided adequate care. She won’t last more than a few days. Tell her family to prepare themselves.”

Skylar nodded. With no further questions, the doctor left.

Skylar stared at Sadie, reflecting on her past life. The irony struck her—when she'd had the chance to start over, it was Sadie, not Skylar, who lay half-dead in a hospital bed. The thought evoked a complex mix of emotions.

Having seen Sadie, Skylar turned to leave.
