Chapter 86
Christopher frantically searched for jobs when he saw Maisy's message. He immediately replied, "No way. She's not the type to cheat. She wouldn't betray me like that." He and Skylar had been together for over seven years, since high school. He never imagined she would betray him.
But since meeting Skylar yesterday, he'd been plagued by unexplainable anxiety. It felt like he was about to lose her.
Skylar's perspective, however, was limited. The most significant person in her life was Paul.
"Mr. Ziegler? Martin Group's CEO's assistant?" Christopher's face stiffened.
"Yeah, him. He might not be on Mr. Martin's level, but he's attractive and capable. You need to do something. Even my dad thinks Skylar should be with Mr. Ziegler, even if she's just his sugar baby."
The more Maisy spoke, the more frustrated she became. Jeffrey's recent attitude was drastically different.
Christopher felt a pang of loss. "No, she's just angry at me. Do you know where she works? Could she be doing this at someone else's request? She would never be someone's sugar baby."
In their seven years together, Skylar and Christopher had remained abstinent, waiting until marriage. Sometimes, he found her conservative nature a bit much; other times, he appreciated it. How could she possibly be someone's sugar baby?
"Why are you still deluding yourself? Think about it!" Maisy snapped before hanging up.
Previously, she'd thought stealing Christopher from Skylar would prove her superiority. Now, she found Christopher annoying. Joe's indifference further fueled her annoyance; she suspected Skylar had influenced Paul against her.
Fearing the worst, Christopher frantically called and texted Skylar, but to no avail. Extremely anxious, he even called Natalie, but she didn't answer. Finally, he called Amelia. "Mom, can you call Skylar's adoptive mother? Maisy said Skylar might be someone's sugar baby. She probably broke up with me because she thought I was poor. I can't lose Skylar."
Amelia, upon hearing this, angrily called Janine.
Janine was home cleaning when she received Amelia's call. Frowning, she wondered why Amelia was interfering.
"Yes, Amelia?" Janine asked.
Amelia huffed. "Did you know Skylar is a sugar baby now? She broke up with my son because of it." She felt Christopher should have been the one to initiate the breakup. Skylar had adored Christopher and tried hard to please him. How dare she betray him?
Janine's face turned cold. "I know Skylar, and you know Chris. He wronged Skylar first. Skylar has been good to you these past few years. If you have any conscience, you wouldn't have made this call."
"I didn't ask her to be nice to me. She did it herself and clung to my son. If it weren't for her, Chris could have found someone better. Janine, you coast on your looks and being a tramp. Look at Skylar now. She's turning into a mess just like you!" Amelia lashed out.
"One day, both you and your son will regret this! Karma will surely come back to haunt you for insulting and hurting Skylar today!" Janine's hands trembled with anger. The thought of Skylar's pain lingered, leaving her in tears. She felt immense pity for Skylar.
