Chapter 891
Rowan knew about Jenny's crush on Joe. He wasn't confident he could beat Joe in a head-to-head competition. However, he knew Joe harbored no feelings for Jenny. Still, Joe and Skylar's behavior toward Jenny that day seemed odd, though Rowan couldn't pinpoint why.
"Your family won't allow you to be with her," Joe said after a drag of his cigarette.
Rowan's eyes darkened. "I have to try," he insisted.
"Jenny isn't as simple and innocent as you think," Joe hinted. Rowan froze. He recognized this as a warning; Joe had never spoken about Jenny like this before.
Rowan frowned. "Understood. I'll consider our relationship seriously."
Ten minutes later, Rowan and Jenny left because she wasn't feeling well. He planned to take her to the hospital. Joe also wanted to leave, but Skylar stopped him.
"Let's play a few games," Skylar said. Her hands itched to pick up a racket. She hadn't exercised recently and saw this as a good opportunity. Honestly, one reason she'd fallen for Joe was his impressive stamina.
Joe raised an eyebrow. "Should we play? Aren't you scared I'll bully you?"
"Let's try it and see who does the bullying," Skylar retorted.
Initially, Skylar didn't get into the game; she sensed Joe wasn't giving it his all. However, she soon found her rhythm. Joe quickly realized he'd underestimated her, and he became more careful as they played.
Nearby onlookers catcalled, "Awesome, gorgeous!"
Joe glared at them; their comments made him deeply uncomfortable. Skylar remained focused. Joe had expended considerable energy playing with Rowan, yet he still performed exceptionally well, as if the first game hadn't happened.
They finished after half an hour.
Skylar wiped her sweat. "You're not going to underestimate me again, are you?" she joked, looking at Joe.
"You played better than Rowan," Joe said, wiping his own sweat. "Did you play often before?"
Skylar nodded. "I used to play badminton frequently with my brothers in the countryside."
Jenny leaned against the car seat, her eyes still teary. She didn't look ill; rather, it seemed someone had wronged her. Rowan remembered Joe's strange behavior. "Jenny," he asked, "are you keeping something from me?"
