Chapter 168
โThe morgue. Sheโs in the morgue. Iโm so sorry for your loss,โ the doctor replied.
Winifred burst into the morgue like sheโd lost her mind. The first thing she saw was a body under a white sheet, and a girlโs arm hanging lifelessly off the edge of the table.
โNo! How could you lie? Why did you lie to me again? You promisedโyou said youโd take me home! You lied to me!โ Winifred screamed, her voice cracking.
She just stood there, shaking all over. She squeezed her fists so hard her knuckles went pale, head hanging low. The next second, her tears came pouring out like a broken damโshe couldnโt hold them back anymore, no matter how hard she tried.
โWhy did you lie? Youโre such a terrible liar!โ she sobbed, her voice hoarse with grief.
Amber came running in, panting for breath, curiosity filling her face. What was Winifred doing in the morgue?
Leaning against the doorway, gasping, Amber asked, โWhatโwhat are you doing?โ
Winifred ignored her completely, her mind overflowing with guilt and regret.
Itโs my fault, Winifred thought, the words echoing in her head. I got her killed. I killed her with my own hands.
โIf I hadnโt messed with Jocelyn, if Iโd just been a bit more ruthless and taken care of her for good, then she wouldnโt have made that final desperate move before dying. I wouldnโt have lost Sienna all over again.โ
โShe promised to take me home, but I never even got the chance to tell her just how much I wanted to go with her. I wanted it so, so much. If only we couldโve made a dealโif only Sienna would promise not to leave again, not to abandon me all aloneโฆ then. There are still so many things I havenโt said to her.โ
โAmber, stay away from me. I might just lose it and hit you,โ Winifred said, her voice low and trembling.
I might just hit you, you heartless thing. You never cry when you should, but when itโs not the time, you bawl your head off, Winifred thought.
Amber blinked, wide-eyed and confused. โWhy would you hit me?โ she asked innocently.
Winifred turned around, was about to answer, but the words caught in her throat as she saw the person standing behind Amber.
There she wasโSienna. Standing tall and straight, her eyes gentle and warm as she appeared out of the darkness like a ray of light. โMy sister!โ Winifred cried out.
She rushed over, gently brushing Amber aside, and threw herself into Siennaโs arms, holding her tight.
Sienna hugged her back, and Winifred was still trembling all over, her voice choked with emotion, tears streaming down her face. โSis, I thoughtโฆ I thought you wereโฆโ Winifred stammered.
โNothing would happen to me, donโt worry. Iโll always be here for youโboth of youโas long as you need me,โ Sienna said softly. Winifred cried for a while, then looked up at her. Sienna reached out and gently wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes.
Her voice was soft and warm. โWinifred, Iโm so happy you called me โsis.โโ
Winifredโs face flushed with heat, and she buried her head in Siennaโs chest, her voice barely more than a whisper. โYouโve always been my sister.โ
โOh, my bun! My butt hurts so bad, ugh,โ Amber whined, dragging out the last word in a pitiful, cutesy way.
Sheโd just been knocked to the floor by Winifred, and she was fumingโready to get her sweet revenge. But just as she was about to pounce, she caught sight of Sienna hugging Winifred.
Instantly, jealousy bubbled up inside her, and she started plotting her next move.
โCome here, Amber, let me take a look,โ Sienna called gently.
Winifred felt that familiar warmth slip away from her, and she instantly got all sulky, shooting Amber a death glare full of resentment.
โSis, she mustโve done it on purpose! She pushed me down and now my butt hurts so badโitโs gotta be all swollen,โ Amber complained loudly.
She posed, pointing at Winifred and tattling on her like a little kid.
Winifred was fuming, practically about to explode. โAmber, donโt you dare slander me! I just gave you a tiny pushโhow could your butt be swollen? Stop making stuff up!โ
Amber hid behind Sienna, looking all pitiful. โSis, look, sheโs being so mean to me! Can we not let her come back home? Sheโll only hit me.โ
โAmber, you get out here right now!โ Winifred growled through gritted teeth, her eyes blazing with fury as she glared at Amber.
โSis, she looks so scary,โ Amber whimpered, clinging even tighter to Sienna.
โAlright now. Winifred, stop scaring your sister. Sheโs just a little scaredy-cat,โ Sienna said, trying to calm things down.
