Chapter 125: An Accident

After some time, Cecilia sensed something was amiss. Nathaniel was merely kissing her. Just as her breath grew labored and her mind blanked from lack of oxygen, a knock came at the door. Nathaniel stopped. It was the secretary with a work report. Cecilia quickly sat down, having once again failed to escape his advances.

At noon, they went to lunch together at Nathaniel's favorite private restaurant. During the meal, he cautiously reassured her, "Don't worry. I won't divorce you." Cecilia was startled. Before she could process this, he calmly added, "If Stella desires recognition, I will give it to her. As for our legal marriage, rest assured, I won't divorce you."

Cecilia stared, incredulous. "Are you joking?"

"If you're not satisfied, suggest other solutions."

Cecilia, realizing he was testing her, declared, "We will divorce, and you will marry Stella."

Nathaniel's face darkened. His suspicions were confirmed; Cecilia's compliance was transactional, not affectionate. "What's wrong? Isn't marrying me enough? Now you're planning for me to marry someone else?" He slammed down his cutlery, his expression frigid. Cecilia lost her appetite.

The car ride back was silent. Then, in a cold, stern voice, Nathaniel said, "Remember, we are still legally married. I don't want you to see Calvin again."

Cecilia was baffled. "Why can you be with Stella, but I can't even see my friends?"

"Because I don't want to be made a fool of!"

"What do you mean?"

"You know exactly what I mean." His voice, icy, continued, "If you're friends, how do you explain...the child?"

Cecilia choked. She couldn't deny her connection with Calvin; it would be impossible to explain Elliot's existence. "The child was an accident. I raised him alone. Currently, Calvin and I are not together."

No man would be indifferent to his wife having another man's child, especially not Nathaniel. At the mention of an accident, a vein throbbed on his forehead. "Was it one accident, or two, or several?"

Cecilia understood. Her hands clenched, her complexion paling. Overwhelmed by his persistent questioning, she said, "Please pull over. I'm not going to the office."

The driver, however, dared not stop without Nathaniel's permission, who dismissed her request. Without warning, she opened the car door and jumped out, just as the car began to move. She fell, scraping her hands and legs. A speeding motorcycle swerved toward her.

Nathaniel instantly leaped from the car, pulling her into his arms, just before the motorcycle passed. Only when it was gone and she was safe did he snap, "Have you lost your mind?"
