Chapter 157: Love or Compatibility

Cecilia stepped out of her bedroom in her slippers, noticing Nathaniel's absence.

โ€œWhen will she come over?โ€

โ€œTen this morning,โ€ Vivian replied.

โ€œAll right; Iโ€™m on my way.โ€

After hanging up, Cecilia sent Nathaniel a text, informing him she was going to Vivianโ€™s. A visit with Jonathan that evening was a possibility. Although only a few days had passed since their last meeting, it felt like an eternity to Cecilia. She wondered how he was.

Meanwhile, Elite Club was unusually quiet. Zachary, having slept poorly, had been summoned for a drink.

โ€œNathaniel, why are you drinking so early? You have no idea how busy Iโ€™ve been.โ€ Zachary hadnโ€™t even removed his lab coat.

Nathaniel observed his friendโ€™s nonchalant demeanor. โ€œWhy so busy? Youโ€™re not married like Darren.โ€

โ€œYou have a wife; what are you doing here?โ€ Zachary retorted.

Nathaniel visibly faltered. Zachary quickly changed the subject.

โ€œIโ€™ve been intensely studying medicine lately. The number of surgeries Iโ€™ve performed these past few days is unbelievable.โ€ He omitted his secret investigation into Vivian, his curiosity about their intertwined past, and the existence of their childโ€”a past he couldn't recall. Nathaniel's swift transformation surprised him.

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean, โ€˜whyโ€™?โ€

โ€œDidnโ€™t you once say youโ€™d rather die than become a doctor?โ€

Zachary raised his wine glass, concealing his expression. โ€œI was young and naive. Medicine is a decent choice; I can heal and save people.โ€ He withheld the truth: Ceciliaโ€™s hearing impairment and nosebleeds fueled his intense studies, his desire to help her live a normal life. This was all he could do for her.

Nathaniel sensed Zacharyโ€™s reticence and didnโ€™t press. He checked his phone; Ceciliaโ€™s text message, which he initially assumed was an apology, revealed she was going to Vivian's.

Zachary leaned in. โ€œCecilia checking in on you?โ€

Nathanielโ€™s lips barely moved. โ€œSheโ€™s going to her best friendโ€™s.โ€

โ€œOh. Vivian?โ€ Zachary asked after a pause.

โ€œRight.โ€

โ€œMy fatherโ€™s been pushing me to see her.โ€

Nathaniel raised an eyebrow. โ€œYou donโ€™t like her?โ€

โ€œNot my type,โ€ Zachary replied.

Nathaniel advised, โ€œWhen choosing a wife, love isnโ€™t everything. Compatibility is key.โ€

โ€œDo you think Ceciliaโ€™s right for you?โ€ Zachary asked.

After a long silence, Nathaniel replied, โ€œShe used to be.โ€

โ€œAnd now? Is she unsuitable?โ€

Nathaniel remained silent, finishing his wine.

Zachary was disappointed. As Nathaniel prepared to leave, he asked, โ€œNathaniel, can you find happiness without love?โ€

Nathaniel looked puzzled. โ€œIf youโ€™re unhappy, end things. Itโ€™s better for both of you.โ€

He was unlike Nathaniel. He needed love in a wife; settling for suitability would bring him no happiness.

In his car, Nathaniel pondered Zacharyโ€™s words, then glanced at Ceciliaโ€™s text. After a long pause, he replied: Okay.
