Chapter 157: Love or Compatibility
Cecilia stepped out of her bedroom in her slippers, noticing Nathaniel's absence.
โWhen will she come over?โ
โTen this morning,โ Vivian replied.
โAll right; Iโm on my way.โ
After hanging up, Cecilia sent Nathaniel a text, informing him she was going to Vivianโs. A visit with Jonathan that evening was a possibility. Although only a few days had passed since their last meeting, it felt like an eternity to Cecilia. She wondered how he was.
Meanwhile, Elite Club was unusually quiet. Zachary, having slept poorly, had been summoned for a drink.
โNathaniel, why are you drinking so early? You have no idea how busy Iโve been.โ Zachary hadnโt even removed his lab coat.
Nathaniel observed his friendโs nonchalant demeanor. โWhy so busy? Youโre not married like Darren.โ
โYou have a wife; what are you doing here?โ Zachary retorted.
Nathaniel visibly faltered. Zachary quickly changed the subject.
โIโve been intensely studying medicine lately. The number of surgeries Iโve performed these past few days is unbelievable.โ He omitted his secret investigation into Vivian, his curiosity about their intertwined past, and the existence of their childโa past he couldn't recall. Nathaniel's swift transformation surprised him.
โWhy?โ
โWhat do you mean, โwhyโ?โ
โDidnโt you once say youโd rather die than become a doctor?โ
Zachary raised his wine glass, concealing his expression. โI was young and naive. Medicine is a decent choice; I can heal and save people.โ He withheld the truth: Ceciliaโs hearing impairment and nosebleeds fueled his intense studies, his desire to help her live a normal life. This was all he could do for her.
Nathaniel sensed Zacharyโs reticence and didnโt press. He checked his phone; Ceciliaโs text message, which he initially assumed was an apology, revealed she was going to Vivian's.
Zachary leaned in. โCecilia checking in on you?โ
Nathanielโs lips barely moved. โSheโs going to her best friendโs.โ
โOh. Vivian?โ Zachary asked after a pause.
โRight.โ
โMy fatherโs been pushing me to see her.โ
Nathaniel raised an eyebrow. โYou donโt like her?โ
โNot my type,โ Zachary replied.
Nathaniel advised, โWhen choosing a wife, love isnโt everything. Compatibility is key.โ
โDo you think Ceciliaโs right for you?โ Zachary asked.
After a long silence, Nathaniel replied, โShe used to be.โ
โAnd now? Is she unsuitable?โ
Nathaniel remained silent, finishing his wine.
Zachary was disappointed. As Nathaniel prepared to leave, he asked, โNathaniel, can you find happiness without love?โ
Nathaniel looked puzzled. โIf youโre unhappy, end things. Itโs better for both of you.โ
He was unlike Nathaniel. He needed love in a wife; settling for suitability would bring him no happiness.
In his car, Nathaniel pondered Zacharyโs words, then glanced at Ceciliaโs text. After a long pause, he replied: Okay.
