Chapter 263: Tired of Running
All past matters would be considered settled. Nathaniel examined the document, each page meticulously crafted to sever all ties between them. The compensation amountโeight billionโwas staggering. How had she amassed such wealth? Heโd investigated Ceciliaโs company; its liquid assets barely reached a few hundred million. Even a sale wouldn't generate that sum.
With a cold chuckle, he tossed the document in the trash. โWhy are you so sure Iโll sign this?โ
โMy client stated that refusal signifies indifference to the money, resolving all past matters,โ Norman replied quietly. โI hope you wonโt manipulate Cecilia further. Remember, you rejected it, not she.โ
Norman, having watched Cecilia grow up, felt compelled to defend her. Heโd expected dismissal, but Nathaniel simply said, โDonโt worry, I wonโt bring this up again.โ Norman was bewildered.
Nathaniel understood Ceciliaโs resolve. Sheโd pay any price to escape him.
After Norman left, Nathaniel turned to Mason. โWhat would you do if someone you adored changed their heart?โ
Thinking of his girlfriend, Mason replied, โIf she fell for another man, Iโd make her regret it.โ
Nathaniel pinched the bridge of his nose. โLetโs go to the airport.โ He was determined to find Cecilia. Mason, sensing futility, offered no resistance.
At Moontown, after a day off, Vivian prepared to depart. Cecilia saw her to the airport. Returning, she received a call from Calvin. โCeci, you need to move. Nathanielโs arriving soon.โ
Cecilia froze. Sheโd expected months, even years, before he found her.
โCalvin, take Martha and the kids first,โ she said.
Calvin was puzzled. โYouโre not leaving?โ
โIโm tired of running,โ Cecilia said, her voice hoarse. โThe worldโs only so big. If Nathaniel never stops, heโll find us sooner or later.โ Years of relentless pursuit, of near misses and constant relocation, had exhausted her. โI want to make it clearโthereโs no future for us.โ
Calvin was silent a moment. โIโll be there. If he forces youโฆ Iโll make him disappear!โ He hung up before she could respond. This wasn't Tudela; Nathaniel wouldn't have free rein here.
An hour later, Martha and the children departed. Elliot and Jonathan were accustomed to moving; Martha, however, was frail, her endurance uncertain.
Cecilia hugged Martha tightly. โYouโve been through so much.โ
Martha chuckled. โSilly child, Iโm getting older, but being with you all is never tiring.โ
Cecilia watched them leave, a profound desolation settling over her.
Nightfall arrived. Wrapped in a blanket, she sat on the couch. Suddenly, a loud bang echoed as the door burst open. Nathaniel stood there, flanked by bodyguards.
