Chapter 406: A Brother Worse Than a Beast

Hearing that, Cecilia frowned.

Magnus, however, continued his rambling. โ€œYou have no idea how much humiliation Iโ€™ve endured. I used to be the bully!โ€ He pleaded, โ€œCecilia, I need your help. If you meet Nicholas, heโ€™ll help us.โ€

Cecilia was about to end the call when Magnus blurted out, โ€œIf Mom hadnโ€™t deceived me, we wouldnโ€™t be in this mess.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ Cecilia asked immediately.

Magnus, drunk and sprawled in the street, explained. Heโ€™d been thrown out of the Royale Club after Ralph froze his card, leaving him unable to pay and severely beaten. He revealed, โ€œDo you know why our family fortune vanished in three years? Mom had me transfer everything to her lover, Ralph! Now the Evans family, rich and powerful, have abandoned me. They froze my card, leading to that beating. If it werenโ€™t for Zachary, Iโ€™d be finished.โ€

Cecilia listened silently, her naivetรฉ shattering. Sheโ€™d assumed Paula married into the Evans family after meeting Ralph abroad; it was far from the truth.

โ€œAre you saying Paula had other men soon after Dad died?โ€

Magnus, beginning to sober, stammered, โ€œIโ€”Iโ€™m not sure. But please, meet Nicholas. Iโ€™m your brother, after all. If I recover, youโ€™ll still be the Smith familyโ€™s young lady.โ€

The call ended abruptly. Cecilia clutched her phone, a chill crawling down her spine. Sheโ€™d believed Paula loved Regas, even if not her, but nowโ€ฆ

She dialed Sven. โ€œSven, have your people investigate Paulaโ€™s past, especially after Fatherโ€™s death.โ€ Her own attempts had yielded little.

โ€œAll right,โ€ Sven readily agreed. He was now Ceciliaโ€™s subordinate, though formerly Calvinโ€™s, and possessed extensive resources for such investigations.

Meanwhile, Magnus tried calling Cecilia again, only to find his number blocked. He grumbled, โ€œThat blockhead! Sheโ€™s useless, and I treated her like a sister!โ€

A fierce kick landed on his leg. Looking up, he saw Zacharyโ€™s cold, handsome face.

โ€œMr. Sinclair?โ€ Magnusโ€™ demeanor shifted instantly.

โ€œWho did you call a blockhead?โ€ Zachary leaned closer, his eyes intense.

Magnus, believing Zachary still despised Cecilia, explained, โ€œMy so-called sister. She wouldnโ€™t help. Mr. Sinclair, could youโ€ฆโ€

Before he could finish, Zachary punched him. Blood trickled from Magnusโ€™ mouth. He scrambled back. โ€œMr. Sinclair, wโ€”what are youโ€”โ€

Zachary said coldly, โ€œLet me be clear: Iโ€™m paying your tab, not for you, but for your sister, Cecilia! Understand?โ€

Zachary was astonished. Such kindness from Cecilia, and such a brotherโ€”worse than a beast.
