Chapter 406: A Brother Worse Than a Beast
Hearing that, Cecilia frowned.
Magnus, however, continued his rambling. โYou have no idea how much humiliation Iโve endured. I used to be the bully!โ He pleaded, โCecilia, I need your help. If you meet Nicholas, heโll help us.โ
Cecilia was about to end the call when Magnus blurted out, โIf Mom hadnโt deceived me, we wouldnโt be in this mess.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ Cecilia asked immediately.
Magnus, drunk and sprawled in the street, explained. Heโd been thrown out of the Royale Club after Ralph froze his card, leaving him unable to pay and severely beaten. He revealed, โDo you know why our family fortune vanished in three years? Mom had me transfer everything to her lover, Ralph! Now the Evans family, rich and powerful, have abandoned me. They froze my card, leading to that beating. If it werenโt for Zachary, Iโd be finished.โ
Cecilia listened silently, her naivetรฉ shattering. Sheโd assumed Paula married into the Evans family after meeting Ralph abroad; it was far from the truth.
โAre you saying Paula had other men soon after Dad died?โ
Magnus, beginning to sober, stammered, โIโIโm not sure. But please, meet Nicholas. Iโm your brother, after all. If I recover, youโll still be the Smith familyโs young lady.โ
The call ended abruptly. Cecilia clutched her phone, a chill crawling down her spine. Sheโd believed Paula loved Regas, even if not her, but nowโฆ
She dialed Sven. โSven, have your people investigate Paulaโs past, especially after Fatherโs death.โ Her own attempts had yielded little.
โAll right,โ Sven readily agreed. He was now Ceciliaโs subordinate, though formerly Calvinโs, and possessed extensive resources for such investigations.
Meanwhile, Magnus tried calling Cecilia again, only to find his number blocked. He grumbled, โThat blockhead! Sheโs useless, and I treated her like a sister!โ
A fierce kick landed on his leg. Looking up, he saw Zacharyโs cold, handsome face.
โMr. Sinclair?โ Magnusโ demeanor shifted instantly.
โWho did you call a blockhead?โ Zachary leaned closer, his eyes intense.
Magnus, believing Zachary still despised Cecilia, explained, โMy so-called sister. She wouldnโt help. Mr. Sinclair, could youโฆโ
Before he could finish, Zachary punched him. Blood trickled from Magnusโ mouth. He scrambled back. โMr. Sinclair, wโwhat are youโโ
Zachary said coldly, โLet me be clear: Iโm paying your tab, not for you, but for your sister, Cecilia! Understand?โ
Zachary was astonished. Such kindness from Cecilia, and such a brotherโworse than a beast.
