Chapter 407: A Part of the Past

Magnus was taken aback. Why was Zachary, his former nemesis, suddenly defending Cecilia? He quickly recovered, however, replying, โ€œYes, I understand. Sheโ€™s my sister. I will treat her with respect.โ€

Zachary stood up. โ€œWhat did you mean earlier when you said Nicholas would help you if Cecilia met him?โ€

Fearful, Magnus recounted Nicholas's words from their meeting a few days prior. Zachary listened, then asked, perplexed, โ€œDoes Nicholas know Cecilia? Otherwise, why would he say that?โ€ Magnus admitted he wasn't sure.

He recalled a time when the Smith and Rainsworth families had interacted. He remembered Cecilia secretly writing love letters to Nathaniel, letters he'd later destroyed. Zachary felt heโ€™d stumbled upon a significant revelation.

He was about to ask more when Darren approached. โ€œZach, what are you doing here?โ€

Zachary immediately warned Magnus, โ€œDonโ€™t speak of this to anyone, or Iโ€™ll rip your tongue out! Get lost!โ€ Magnus fled.

Darren, impeccably suited, joined Zachary. โ€œWhy have you been avoiding the Elite Club and frequenting the Royale Club?โ€ (Both clubs were owned by Darren in Tudela.)

โ€œI just happened to be here,โ€ Zachary replied, quickly changing the subject. โ€œDarren, why are you working this late instead of being with your wife?โ€ He was concerned Darren might inquire about Magnus. Despite their years of acquaintance, Zachary never fully understood Darrenโ€™s contemplative nature and preferred he remain unaware of the recent events.

Chapter 407: A Part of the Past (Continued)

โ€œIโ€™m heading back now. Sheโ€™s been quite moody lately due to her pregnancy,โ€ Darren said casually, glancing at Magnusโ€™ retreating figure before entering his car. Once inside, he called home, his voice gentle. โ€œNow that youโ€™re pregnant, try to behave. You wouldnโ€™t want me to send you back to the Elite Club, would you?โ€

After Darrenโ€™s departure, Zachary informed Nathaniel of the dayโ€™s events. Nathaniel, already home, leaned back, his eyes cold and resolute.

Later, Cecilia, clutching her belly, went for an evening stroll to aid digestion. Nathaniel, hearing her humming, followed.

โ€œWhy are you here?โ€ Cecilia asked, surprised.

Nathaniel approached, gently draping his coat over her shoulders. โ€œItโ€™s chilly. Donโ€™t catch a cold.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine,โ€ she waved him off, explaining her sour mood stemmed from Magnusโ€™s situation.

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll walk with you.โ€ He took her icy hand. Frowning, he asked, โ€œWhy are your hands so cold?โ€

She started to pull away, but he said, โ€œHold on to me. I canโ€™t see.โ€ She complied; it was their first hand-in-hand walk.

โ€œIs everything okay at home today?โ€ he asked tentatively.

Cecilia, assuming Nathanielโ€™s amnesia, revealed Magnusโ€™s story about Paula and another man, omitting Nicholas entirely, considering him a past misunderstanding.
