Chapter 458: Out of Your League
Ralph and Paula visited George to discuss a valuable plot of land in Tudela. Their recent family connection to the Rainsworthsโthrough Ralph's daughter's marriage to Nicholasโled them to believe this would secure a favorable deal, especially given the Rainsworths' relationship with the Sinclairs.
However, Paula was surprised to find Jonathan present. She vaguely remembered meeting Elliot, Jonathan's father, but couldn't place him. George, already aware of the Evans' underhanded business practices, remained seated, offering a curt greeting.
Paula's gaze kept returning to Jonathan, who, in his tailored suit, seemed remarkably mature. Beside him sat Vivian, whom Paula knew slightly. While not conventionally beautiful, Vivian possessed a sophisticated air and had married into the Sinclair family despite her humble origins.
Paula attempted to engage Vivian, mentioning past interactions, but Vivian's response revealed a less-than-pleasant memory of a previous encounter: Paula had once dismissed Vivian as an unsuitable associate for their family.
This revelation surprised George, who, with obvious authority, pointedly asked Paula, "Madam Paula, isn't it interesting that my future granddaughter-in-law, Vivian, is marrying into your family? Is she still out of your league?"
Paula, flustered, denied the incident. Vivian, however, subtly retorted, "Perhaps I'm just young and forgetful, certainly not as sharp as an elder like you."
Stung by Vivian's rebuke, Paula outwardly smoothed things over, praising Jonathan's intelligence and charm. However, when she attempted to touch Jonathan's head, he firmly rebuffed her, stating his preference for personal space.
Ralph, sensing the escalating tension, subtly signaled Paula to stop. He then presented their offer for the land: five hundred million.
George considered the substantial offerโsignificantly higher than a previous three hundred million bid he'd rejectedโand weighed his options, mindful of his connection to Nicholas. But before he could respond, Jonathan spoke, silencing the room.
