Chapter 587: Have You Been Doing Well?
Dressed in a gown, Elena looked stunning and remarkably youthful. When she entered and saw Elliot, she was instantly reminded of Nathanielโs childhood.
โEli, Iโm your grandma,โ she said, bending to embrace him.
Elliot evaded her. โMaโam, I believe youโve mistaken me for someone else. Iโm not your grandson.โ
Elena choked back a sob. It was her first time being a grandmother, and she felt unsure. Immediately, she had her subordinates place the gifts before him.
โEli, I bought these for you.โ
Another one buying him giftsโฆ Elliot looked up to see rows of bodyguards, each holding the latest video games, action figures, and high-end model kits. They were clearly expensive. This woman is quite wealthy and generousโmuch more so than Paula, he thought, adopting a more benevolent expression.
โIโm sorry, Maโam. Mommy said I canโt accept things from strangers.โ
Strangerโฆ Elena was hurt.
โEli, Iโm not a stranger. Youโll understand in time. Just take the gifts.โ She was upset he didnโt call her โgrandma,โ but as her grandson, she couldnโt bring herself to be angry.
Elliot yawned. โNo, no, I really donโt know you. Youโve mistaken me. I need to rest now. Bye.โ
Elena choked back another sob. Why isnโt he reacting to the gifts? Donโt all children love this kind of thing? She was at a loss, unsure how to coax him.
The child before her was the spitting image of a young Nathaniel.
โWhat will it take for you to believe Iโm your grandma?โ
Elliot said earnestly, โI wonโt believe you because I already have a grandma.โ
Elena was bewildered. Who else would claim to be Nathanielโs mother? She supposed he might be referring to Ceciliaโs mother.
โEli, I am your grandma, and your mother is my daughter-in-law.โ She wasnโt sure if he understood the term.
โReally?โ Elliot asked, blinking.
โYes.โ
โBut if youโre my grandma, why have I never seen you before?โ
Elenaโs eyes filled with affection. โThatโs because I wasnโt aware of your existence,โ she said, reaching for his hand. Again, Elliot dodged her. Her hand froze mid-air.
โEli, could you spare a moment to chat?โ
โOkay.โ
Elliot decided to gauge her intentions. Elena asked where he lived.
โI lived in a rented house with Mommy.โ
Rented houseโฆ Elena believed renters led miserable lives. She felt even more heartbroken for Elliot.
โHow have you spent these past years?โ
After a momentโs thought, Elliot smoothly lied, โWhen Mommy worked, I stayed home with Grandma.โ In fact, this was Jonathanโs life.
โWhich grandma?โ
Elena found this odd. Ceciliaโs mother was out of the question; she knew how abhorrently Paula had treated her. She wouldnโt have helped Cecilia care for the child.
โGrandma Martha.โ
After inquiring, Elena discovered โGrandma Marthaโ was Ceciliaโs former nanny. Cecilia seems to have a poor grasp of propriety. She even allowed Eli to call the nanny โgrandma.โ
โHave you been doing well?โ
โOf course. I was having a great time, much more than I am here. Could you please ask Mr. Rainsworth to release me? No matter the ransom, my daddy will pay it.โ
