Chapter 636: Remained in the Same Spot
Even though Nathaniel clearly remembered the route, his blindness meant he would undoubtedly bump into people while walking. He disliked feeling his way around, let alone using a cane. The hospital entrance was crowded with parked cars, making it difficult for his driver to find a space. Consequently, Nathaniel remained in the same spot for a considerable time. That day, he learned a valuable lesson: not to upset Cecilia in public, especially a pregnant woman.
The driver had never seen his boss so helpless. He was also shocked that Cecilia had left the blind Nathaniel at the hospital entrance. He worried about what might happen. He quickly jogged to Nathaniel's side. "Mr. Rainsworth, are you all right?"
Nathaniel, though impatient, surprisingly didn't lose his temper. "Be quicker next time."
"Sorry, it was hard to find a parking spot," the driver replied.
Nathaniel didn't press the matter further. The driver, relieved, led Nathaniel to the car, only to find it gone, a parking ticket lying on the ground. Nearby car owners complained about the towing, vowing to park more carefully in the future.
The driver, pale, informed Nathaniel, his voice trembling, "Boss, the car's been towed awayโฆ"
Nathaniel scowled. The driver braced himself for dismissal, but instead heard, "Let's take a taxi back."
"Huh?" The driver was astonished.
"Don't you know how to hail a taxi?" Nathaniel retorted. Nathaniel, unfamiliar with taxis, having only heard Cecilia mention them, decided to try one.
"I do, and I'll do it now." The driver felt immense relief. He was grateful for Nathaniel's unexpected consideration.
Later, Cecilia was surprised to see Nathaniel return by taxi. Still upset, she was tending the outdoor plants when she saw Nathaniel and his driver disembark. Unsure if she'd seen correctly, she looked again.
The driver dropped Nathaniel at the entrance, who then entered the hospital alone. The driver saw Cecilia at the door and approached her. "Mrs. Rainsworth, I know this might seem intrusive, but I can't help it. Do you know how long Mr. Rainsworth stood at the hospital entrance today?"
Cecilia was confused. "How long?"
"A full half hour."
Cecilia stared, bewildered. She didn't realize Nathaniel rarely walked anywhere, let alone waited half an hour for a driver.
Although intimidated by Nathaniel, the driver respected him, recognizing his generosity in paying the highest wages in the industry. "After I went to pick him up, the car was towed away." He sighed. "Mrs. Rainsworth, being abandoned like thatโฆ it's something Mr. Rainsworth has never experienced before."
Cecilia was speechless. She thought, He's done that to me countless times. Why should I feel sorry for him?
"I understand," Cecilia said, avoiding an argument.
As the driver left, he added, "Mrs. Rainsworth, understanding is important in a marriage. Mr. Rainsworth is blind, so please be more patient."
Cecilia had always assumed Nathaniel was unbearable, cared for only by his mother. She was surprised by the driver's genuine concern. Does Nathaniel really feel wronged? Enough that the driver felt compelled to speak up?
