Chapter 637: Wonder If She Went Too Far

Watching the driver depart angrily, Cecilia wondered if she had gone too far. Leaving him, blind, seemed unfair.

She set down her watering can and entered the living room. Nathaniel sat on the couch, eyes closed, resembling a wronged spouse nursing grievances silently. Cecilia approached, intending to speak, but noticed documents spread before himโ€”Smith Corporation's past assets. She stared, dazed.

Nathaniel, without opening his eyes, said, โ€œEverything you asked for is here. Check it out and see if anythingโ€™s missing.โ€

Cecilia glanced at the documents, recalling the driver's comment about Nathaniel waiting alone at the hospital for half an hour. Guilt washed over her. โ€œIโ€ฆ Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

Nathaniel initially assumed her apology concerned leaving with the children. Surprised, she continued, โ€œI shouldnโ€™t have left you alone at the hospital entrance. Iโ€™ll be more careful. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

He replied simply, โ€œOkay,โ€ though even his forgiveness felt like a task delegated to an employee.

Cecilia retrieved the documents. โ€œThank you for this information,โ€ she added.

She rushed upstairs, eager to examine them. She hadn't anticipated Nathaniel's thoroughness; his past investigation of Smith Corporation was incredibly detailed, revealing evidence of asset transfers crucial to her upcoming legal battles. After photographing the documents, she sent them to Norman for review.

Within an hour, Norman reported back, identifying useful evidence. โ€œCecilia, how did you find so much so quickly?โ€

โ€œA friend collaborated with Smith Corporation in the past,โ€ she replied vaguely, and Norman didn't press. He simply instructed her to bring the originals and copies when she could.

Exhausted, Cecilia fell asleep and slept soundly until evening, awakened by voices from downstairs.

Rubbing her eyes, she emerged to find Elena, laden with gifts, her face alight as she looked at Elliot. โ€œEli, may I hold you?โ€ she asked expectantly.

Elliot turned away. โ€œNo.โ€

Elena's smile faded. โ€œThis child is just like you were,โ€ she said to Nathaniel, smiling. โ€œNeither of you liked being held.โ€ Then, she looked around. โ€œHas Jon not returned yet?โ€

โ€œMhm,โ€ Nathaniel replied.

โ€œItโ€™s not ideal for our Rainsworth familyโ€™s child to be raised by the Sinclairs. We should bring him back soon,โ€ Elena said, adding that she hadn't seen Jon in a while.

Nathaniel remained silent, indicating his disagreement. Elena's displeasure was evident. Seeing Cecilia descend the stairs, she asked, โ€œWhat were you doing upstairs? Why are you only coming down now?โ€

Cecilia explained, โ€œI was asleep.โ€

A chill entered Elena's eyes. โ€œEven pregnant, you canโ€™t sleep all day and night. Itโ€™s not good for the baby.โ€

Elliot, surprised by Elenaโ€™s rebuke, retorted, โ€œYour thinking is old-fashioned, old woman. Pregnant women need plenty of rest. Since Mommyโ€™s having twins, she needs three times the sleep.โ€
