Chapter 78: An Invitation
โMom and Dad said Ms. Ross and Uncle Nathaniel got together because she saved Grandma Elena. I even saw Uncle Nathaniel pushing Ms. Ross away,โ Felix whispered.
Jonathan had only intended to learn about the Rainsworth family from Felix, but unexpectedly stumbled upon a secret about his father. He still needed to verify its authenticity.
โThis is just your assertion,โ Jonathan said.
Though Felix didn't fully understand, he sensed Jonathan's distrust.
โThis weekend is my great-grandfatherโs birthday. Ms. Ross will be there, and Iโm going with my parents. Come and see for yourself if you donโt believe me.โ
Jonathanโs opportunity arrived effortlessly.
โAll right, if youโre right, Iโll trust you. But you have to ensure my comfort,โ Jonathan agreed readily. He wouldn't be at a disadvantage. He also planned to teach Stella a lesson during his visit to Rainsworth Manor. Stealing his father was one thing, but plagiarizing his motherโs artwork? Unacceptable.
On the weekend, Cecilia took a private car to Vivianโs home. She stared out at the rain, lost in thought. The driver spoke intermittently. โMs. Smith, Mr. Reese also enjoys watching rain from the car. He often mentioned a little girl who found comfort in it, believing it washed away her sorrows. That little girl was you.โ
Cecilia smiled. โThat must be something I said as a child. Iโd forgotten.โ
โItโs fate that Mr. Reese is reunited with you,โ the driver said.
Cecilia found the coincidence intriguing. They arrived at Vivianโs mansion.
Vivian and Jonathan greeted Cecilia at the door.
โCeci, come in. Jon and I have been waiting for dinner,โ Vivian said, both she and Jonathan watching her expectantly.
โAll right.โ
Cecilia embraced Jonathan, gently rubbing his cheeks. Several days had passed since their last meeting.
โHowโs school?โ she asked.
Jonathanโs cheeks flushed. โGreat.โ
Vivian added, โJonathan says heโs quite popular with the girls these days. Heโs even outshining the other boys.โ
Inheriting Cecilia and Nathanielโs good genes, Jonathan was charming and intelligent. Vivian believed he'd be a ladies' man when he grew up.
โMommy, Iโve been good,โ Jonathan said.
Cecilia caressed his cheek and kissed his forehead. โThatโs great,โ she said.
Jonathanโs face reddened. After a moment, he remembered.
โMommy, Iโm going to a friendโs house tomorrow.โ He didn't mention Felix.
โYouโve made friends quickly! Thatโs wonderful,โ Cecilia said happily. โRest early tonight.โ
โOkay.โ
After dinner, Jonathan went to sleep. Cecilia and Vivian were talking when Vivian produced two invitations.
โWhat are these?โ Cecilia asked, confused.
โTomorrow is Old Mr. Rainsworthโs eightieth birthday celebration. All of Tudelaโs prominent figures will be there,โ Vivian said, lowering her voice. โYou know how my fatherโฆโ
