Alaric was kicking himself now, truly. He should’ve listened to Lucian sooner. Then, he wouldn’t have fallen for Evelina’s tricks yesterday. Had he called her out then and there, Lemina wouldn’t be this furious, and Lucian’s project wouldn’t have lost its shot at the big league.

Evelina took a few steps back. “Alaric, I was doing it for Asher’s investment, for Lucian’s project, you know. I didn’t see Lemira’s trap coming!”

“A trap?”

“Yes, a trap! Lemira clearly set us up to fall!”

Alaric’s face hardened. “It was you who jumped, dragging me along. You were the one who plagiarized, you plotted against Lemira first, leading to this mess! This is all on you!”

Hearing Evelina twist the facts, Alaric might have believed it was Lemira’s fault in the past. But not this time; he had seen everything with his own eyes. This had nothing to do with Lemira; it was Evelina trying to outsmart Lemira and failing miserably.

Evelina shrank back, not expecting Alaric to be so clear-headed and not fall for it this time! She was slightly agitated deep down. She looked at Alaric. “But Alaric, remember, you tacitly approved of what I did, suggesting you were on the same page as me, right?”

“Shut it, don’t lump me with you!”

Alaric was furious but felt a twinge of guilt too. “Alaric, do I need to remind you? Not just this time, but think about the recent team issue. Weren’t you also hoping Lemira would slink back to the Langston family, then join your team for the tournament?”

Evelina’s eyes were mocking. “You’re just pinning everything on me. That’s hardly fair.”

“Evelina, I can’t believe you’re this kind of person!”

Alaric grabbed Evelina’s shoulders. “You need to clear this up with Asher; I’m not involved in this mess.”

“And you think Asher would believe that?”

Alaric paused. “So, this is the real you, huh?”

Evelina put on an innocent face. “Alaric, I’ve always been like this. It’s you who can’t face what you’ve done.”

“Enough, stop talking.”

Alaric pushed Evelina away, but she stumbled and fell, hitting her forehead on the step; blood immediately started flowing. Seeing the blood, Alaric was taken aback.

That’s when Lucian came over, quickly helping Evelina up. “Alaric, what are you doing?”

Alaric was stunned. “I didn’t mean to.”

Seeing Lucian help her, Evelina quickly put on a surprised look. “Lucian, it’s not Alaric’s fault, I wasn’t steady, it wasn’t on purpose.”

Lucian, hearing Evelina’s insincere words, let go in disgust. He turned to Alaric. “Alaric, what exactly happened with you and Evelina yesterday? I got a lawyer’s letter; Maple Group, representing Lemira, is suing you both.”

Alaric’s face fell. “Sorry, Lucian, I messed up.”

He should’ve stopped Evelina. Lucian was anxious. “What happened, why didn’t you involve me in yesterday’s meeting?”

Evelina spoke up. “Asher said you needed rest, told us not to bother you with this.”

Mainly because it involved Lemira, Asher was worried Lucian might act irrationally, so he was kept in the dark! And yet, Lemira got away!

“Enough, Evelina, do you really think I’d believe that?” Lucian clearly didn’t. It was likely Asher was worried that upon seeing Lemira, Lucian might side with her, so he was excluded.

Chapter 33

Evelina, startled, blood drying on her face, “Lucian, I was really trying to help you!”

Lucian remained silent, giving Evelina a cold look. Alaric, feeling like a zombie, recounted everything that happened yesterday.
