Chapter 417
Lemira was seething with anger. Her expression icy, she challenged, โYou really want me to take on this role? Arenโt you scared Iโll mess up your precious play?โ
โItโs fine. After all, youโre my sister, and I can put up with a less-than-stellar performance. But what I canโt stand is your defiance, always at odds with me.โ
Caspian dropped the script in front of Lemira: โTake a good look at your part. This time, Eveโs the star, and youโre playing the innocent victim.โ
โThe innocent victim? That should be Evelinaโs role, not mine. Sheโs the professional.โ
โJealous, are we? Fine, call me bro, and Iโll swap you into the lead role, making Eve your supporting act. That way, you canโt accuse me of playing favorites.โ
Seeing Caspianโs smug expression, Lemira retorted coldly, โIf Asher finds out what youโre doing, heโll accuse you of being ungrateful, especially after everything Evelina has done for the Langston family.โ
โAsherโs just obsessed with appearances. Sheโs just a driverโs daughter. How can she compare to you?โ
โDonโt you see the contradiction in your words?โ
Lemira remembered how Caspian used to be quite fond of Evelina.
โLemira, youโve always thought I favored Evelina over you, right? But thereโs a reason for that. She saved my life.โ
Evelina saved Caspianโs life? She had no idea. Caspian was always getting into trouble, picking fights, and being cornered by thugs. One time, Caspian got seriously injured, bloodied and hiding in an alley. Lemira had rushed out to find help and bumped into Evelina, who was on her way home from school. After Lemira explained the situation, the thugs caught up and recognized her. In the moment, Evelina pointed out where Caspian was hiding. To prevent the thugs from finding Caspian, Lemira had no choice but to run in the opposite direction, drawing them away from him. She was nearly killed by those thugs but was saved by a patrolling officer. But when Caspian woke up, he began treating her worse while his kindness towards Evelina grew.
Was it all because of that incident?
Caspian, his anger barely contained, said, โLemira, it seems youโve forgotten, but I remember it clearly.โ Back then, he was on the brink of death, and Lemira had abandoned him. His only sister had left him to die, and it was Evelina who came back to save him. Evelina told him Lemira had run away in fear. From that moment, Caspian resented Lemira, showing favoritism towards Evelina and enjoying seeing Lemira ostracized and slandered by everyone else. Only that could ease the bitterness in his heart.
Lโemira, her gaze icy, pressed, โAnd when exactly did Evelina save you?โ
โJust that time.โ
Caspian was interrupted by a knock at the door. โCaspian, someoneโs looking for you.โ
Caspian managed to calm himself. He looked at Lemira, โI donโt believe youโve forgotten. Youโre just playing dumb.โ
โI truly donโt remember.โ
โPlease, you wanted to go out for a birthday cake, and our parents died because of it. Youโre alive and well but forgot everything about the accident, making it impossible to find the real culprit.โ
Lemiraโs face paled, โWhat do you mean?โ
โThat driver was just a scapegoat. There had to be someone else in that car, maybe even the one driving. But youโve โforgottenโ everything, playing the victim, the amnesiac.โ
Lemira stood up abruptly, โIโm not pretending to forget. I genuinely donโt remember.โ
โHa, Lemira, you accuse us of favoritism, but youโre the reason our parents are dead. You made our lives a misery for years. We didnโt kick you out of the house, and you dare say weโre biased? Do you think you deserveโฆโ
Caspian couldnโt stand to say more, leaving in a huff. He refused to believe Lemira couldnโt remember their ordeal, thinking she just didnโt want to admit her wrongdoing. The car accident was the same. Lemira sat back down, pondering Caspianโs words. But no one had ever spoken to her about that incident in all these years.
